The X Factor is very negative tonight. The crowd are like a baying mob. Awful atmosphere.

Considering all the research shows that audiences these days want to watch positive shows, it is astonishing that XF producers think all this negativity will attract audiences. XF could end up with a shocker of a rating tonight if the audience repels this six chair format. Last year, the ratings for the 6 chair format were bad.

They aren't the issue. Some characters are "old" as in painted into a corner and have no longer anywhere to progress, Shane Richie, Adam Woodyatt, Perry Fenwick.

Rudolph Walker can act as can Timothy West who has lots of stories in his character as it a new one , and June Brown is a great actress.

Gogglebox is the top trending topic at the moment, so it looks like Channel 4 will get the ratings victory tonight.

Well that is obviously what they planned and wanted so will it turn the audience away or on.

Strictly second with 3 others.

But you were suggesting that some of the older characters/actors should go to be replaced by younger ones.So what is the issue ?

It's just awful. The first time I've felt compelled to turn off. The wrong singers being put through as usual. We've just seen the best one of the night sent home. But an overriding sour tone is the main reason.

Might be slightly concerning for The X Factor that the young audience is seemingly skewing towards Gogglebox.

Nope sorry I meant if I were trying to regain the audience I would axe the old cast members who have been there way too long, Rita Simons, Shane Ritchie, Perry Fenwick, Diane Parish, etc and replace them with brand new families, at all ends of the age spectrum. I would argue that "EastEnders" creative renewal has not been radical or made enough impact for the general viewer to think there was any change to it.

The crowd are making this awful, not a nice show to watch.

I would have thought a successful GBox would damage XF - but who knows?

Twitter algorithms will favour Gogglebox since it hasn't been on tv / discussed as heavily recently. Same with Strictly to a lesser extent.

I take your point but the constant introduction of new characters actually confuses viewers as more and more relatives we've never heard of turn up (all with instant jobs and accommodation). Adam had a pretty major role recently and clearly Shane will have (before he pops off for his traditional Christmas panto). Maybe the writers should build up their parts, not axe them. Nothing wrong with enduring characters (see Ken Barlow) we have neighbours who have lived in the same house for 50 years.

Since we're monitoring trends

"Monica (XF contestant)
#XFactorBootCampFriday
#BootCamp
What is Cheryl"

All now trending

Awful episode of X Factor tonight. Everything has been odd from start to finish.

It doesn't feel like X Factor at all. The show has morphed into something else.

It's so negative and really unwatchable. If I liked SCD I might even turn over, but I won't.

One of those two names needs killed off just to make an impact on the figures. Perhaps Shane as he's not been there from the beginning. There is nothing he could do now that would have as much impact as his character being killed off. The introduction of The Carter family gave the show a breath of life but rather than continuing they stopped and went back to recycling old characters and stories and locked themselves into a creative cul de sac again. When ratings are that low you have to make major decisions, Tredwell Collins knew cast members and brought his mates back a bit too much. You need a fresh eye on it if you want it to change not maintain a level. There are many good points about stability and steadily rebuilding a show. I think I'd have liked a radical, tear it up and start again approach. I can't get back into the show, it just seems like "EastEnders" from the past and some of the acting is bad. The young cast especially.
