The peak audience for Strictly is also quite worrying

I'd like to see them and Channel 4's offerings just to get rid of a nagging doubt in my mind. This is another case where the +1 look slightly odd. I'm not saying they're wrong - just that it would be nice to see more evidence instead of one data point.

The half hour clashes are understandable on Saturdays imo, two long shows are bound to clash with them both wanting the best slot, but purposely putting a show in a slot it usually isn't in to create a clash is just pissing off viewers (and, yes, I know both sides have done this now.)

I said that there weren't enough viewers around on Friday night for Strictly & X Factor to get big ratings. If only one was on and not the other they would have been higher. I expected 6/7m so the ratings aren't too much of a surprise.

Those that said X Factor would go really low were proved right. Never should have been on Friday. The ego of scheduling. BBC1 and ITV were boosted at 9pm though after sitcoms and Piers Morgan didn't bring viewers in.

Who is happiest of all? Channel 4 with Gogglebox.

I agree. Pure unashamed cynicism on ITV's part that showed no respect for the viewer.

I think the way Itv are looking at it is that they've aired 8 episodes of XF so far and know it can get about 8m on the weekends. And that they were willing to sacrifice one episode out of a total 30 episodes this series to damage SCD.”

Possibly. I can't see it working. If Strictly falls this series it's because it's lost it's sparkle for some rather than because ITV decided to play silly beggars with the first live show.

Exactly. ITV's schedule is only just coming to life after what feels like an eternity of absolute rubbish. BBC1 recently has been positing some really disappointing numbers, excluding Bake Off. I refuse to believe in all the hours of primetime they could not work together and create a strong schedule on both channels that help maintain their biggest hits.

Itv are clearly hoping that many of the 1.5m viewers who missed the SCD launch wont bother with the rest of the series. Even if it's 0.5m of those 1.5m viewers who dont return to watch, that would be a job done, as long as XF rebounds tonight.

But I dont think XF will rebound tonight because it is facing SCD for half an hour which will drag it down into the 7s.

But ITV have ended up with millions more watching their channel between 9 and 10 on a Friday night than they've had all year so in that respect it's been a success for them.

X Factor and Strictly were on the low side and X Factor's peak is due to +1 being added.

Agree this is quiet possible,as was the case with the first clash.

I would expect both shows to be back to more normal figures tonight. And last night's numbers are far more embarassing for X Factor than Strictly.

Surely the Ryder Cup highlights on BBC Two picked up a good few viewers last night?

Yes far more embarrassing for Itv that XF was almost down to 5m. Also, SCD will crush XF during the overlap tonight and damage its average for the rest of the series ever Saturday night.

I don't really think there's any way to spin this as a success for ITV, despite the desperate attempts.

What did the soaps get?

Just to punctuate the ongoing Strictly/X Factor buzz, I'd just like to point out that WILTY was up again from last week. Could be one of its highest ratings I think.

Indeed but unfortunately people seem to think that consolidated ratings only matter for Doctor Who and no other show.

For big shows like Strictly and X Factor the overnights are still important, they're the numbers that appear in the headlines.

What did it get? Its current highest ever overnight is 4m for the first episode of S5, and its best overnight in the 8.30pm slot is 3.68m.

WILTY up again. I realise that's down to the SCD audience tuning in early, but if they saw the whole of Lee Mack's Teletubbies story and preferred that to what is apparently a currently poor CS next week, could we see another rise?

I won't go on about the half hour clashes (except to say Strictly hardly sinks to sub 2m when airing between 6pm and 6.30pm ) but I agree about the extra shows. Saying that, the Strictly launch wasn't an extra show and it aired over the same weekend as last year. With the flop that was Tumble polluting Saturday nights they had little where else to put it without clashing with either Coronation Street or The X Factor.

Amazing rating for Gogglebox. I'm so surprised it did so well it's the rating of the night for me. It's well deserved too, as it's a brilliant show. Beat X Factor on the +1 option too!

Anyone think that X Factor and Strictly might struggle to gather momentum over the weekend now, after last night's disappointing clash? I can see some viewers returning to both shows tonight, but I think this first clash may harm the rest of the weekend's figures and both shows won't increase very much.

Possible, but imo less possible than last time.

The launch show moved days this year, and Strictly always timeshifts less on Sundays, so the timeshift was most likely down because of the change of days, but last years Friday show added 1.5m and it's on the same day this year, so is more likely to post a similar timeshift to last year. I'm not saying it will add 1.5m again, but I'm saying it's less likely to timeshift so low that X Factor can take over.
