The question there is how did a show that apparently everybody hates, the critics hate, the papers hate, everybody on Twitter hates, that nobody watches anymore manage to come so close to a show that everybody loves and is the best thing ever??

Yet again the many pages of analysis last night talking up all those opinions was basically a waste of time.

What are the comparisons year on year?

"@TVRatingsUK: Yesterday's #Strictly was 930,000 down on last year's equivalent episode, #TheXFactor up 20,000."

So TXF is over 7m despite the clash of 3ominutes and it seems to have dented Strictly Come Dancing in the process.

Unexpected that TXF would be that close. Should mean tonight's rating is over 8.5m.

Who cares what it got without +1? Also last year there was no clash with Strictly basically (5 mins which is nothing).

There was no 8 million target, what a load of bollocks. LOWEST Saturday night rating in 5 years for Strictly.

Also Doctor Who got no Strictly boost whatsoever which will be disappointing for BBC1.

Really? That is bad news for the programme, maybe viewers are getting bored of the identical format year after year.

So TXF is level year on year and Strictly down almost 1m yet XF rating is bad and Strictly is good??!! Samuel its Strictly's worst Saturday rating for 5-years.

I think that, taken in the round, last night's figures (which are generally down) do indicate that less people are watching TV live as broadcast.

It is worth remembering that the equivalent SCD episode last year was the show's highest 1st Saturday night rating ever. So of course it was going to be down year on year because the comparitive number was so high by the show's own standards.

The equivalent episode for XF last year was the show's worst Saturday night rating, at the time, for 5 years. And it was XF's 2nd lowest Saturday night rating all series last year. So the fact last night's episode is down at that kind of level is nothing to be happy about. That is a pioor rating for Xf.

Apologies, you are correct. Not that beating that rating is anything to brag about. That rating aired in an undesirable 6.00-7.05pm timeslot on the day of an Autumn heatwave.

That's really close which I didn't expect considering the clash. That's bad for Strictly.

Not bad for SCD. I think the ratings may rise as the series goes on and the competition really gets going...

XF's not bad either... I think this rating of 7-8 million is to be expected for the show now.

I found last nights DW a bit boring. Skipped through most of it. Next weeks looks better, but I think it might be down again next week. It didn't get much of a boost from Strictly as I expected.

4.4million for Pointless Celebs last night and a 28pct share, fantastic! Leading into SCD does a fantastic job boosting it, as loads of old people just switch onto BBC1 whilst waiting for SCD.

Only 3.4m for The Chase last night, SCD damaged it severely. Through The Keyhole got one of its worst ever ratings with just 3.3m.

Both shows recovered well, X Factor recovered better, but it was coming from a lower base.

This does suggest that the Friday night X Factor did its job in a way.

It's you who is usually obsessed with year on year ratings and everything having to be up or else it is a bad result. And you never factor in what actually caused last years ratings, so you can't start doing this now.

Wasn't the I'm a Celeb launch last year one of the highest ever, yet I'm sure you still be running around with 'down on last year' posts if it rates 0.1m lower.

I had previously expressed concerns regarding DW's overnight figures when ranged against XF. The timeshifts will be the ones to look out for now.

Look at the Breakdown:

19:00 ….. 6.9 (36.9%) ….. 3.0 (16.2%)
19:15 ….. 7.9 (39.7%) ….. 3.3 (16.4%)
19:30 ….. 8.5 (41.4%) ….. 3.8 (18.4%)
19:45 ….. 8.8 (41.7%) ….. 4.2 (19.8%)
20:00 ….. 8.7 (37.4%) ….. 6.4 (27.3%)
20:15 ….. 7.7 (33.4%) ….. 7.1 (30.8%)
20:30 ….. 5.0 (22.5%) ….. 8.3 (37.0%)
20:45 ….. 4.8 (21.3%) ….. 8.3 (36.8%)
21:00 ….. 4.9 (21.6%) ….. 8.0 (35.6%)

XF only averaged 6.7million between 8-8.30pm, and then jumped about 1.5million after that. SCD did a splendid job harming XF's first 30mins, and this is why the BBC will continue to schedule SCD to run until 8.20/8.30pm every week. It doesnt hurt SCD's own figures which remained steady but does severely dent XF!

"Strictly" ratings aren't as high as I'd hoped. Not the best by its own standards. Last night show was really good. I'm surprised!

I wasn't lying, I was merely picking up on what Score said. I think despite a more significant clash that's actually a decent result for XF. I know many were predicting much worse after Friday's numbers.
