Nothing much happened last night, so I'm guessing the Autumn boost has started. Everything seems to be up.

That would make sense except DS tape-check (at least these days) and MediaGuardian never have to my knowledge, so that's a bit strange.

EastEnders

2013: 7.02m (33.3%), BBC 3: 540k (4.0%)
2014: 6.95m (35.1%), BBC 3: 464k (3.7%)

So slightly down YOY, but not too bad. Share-wise a fairly big increase - 34-5% is pretty much where EE should be.

September has been a slowly improving month for Eastenders with the first half of the month frequently pulling ratings below 6m, but a publicity campaign and the autumn nights drawing in led to the 2nd half of the month seeing all ratings above 6m (apart from an Emmerdale clash). Overall the month has averaged out at 6.10m (30.5%), which is down 620k year-on-year. So far May is the only month this year that has been up. There were 2 Emmerdale clashes this September, whereas last September there were none at all; removing them increases the monthly average by 170k. The highest rating of the month came on Monday 29th with 7.06m (31.4%) - also the highest episode since early June; whilst the lowest rating of the month came during an Emmerdale clash on Tuesday 2nd with 4.65m (23.7%).

I think live episodes are more for the benefit of actors and producers, viewers are less impressed (there will be a back-up tape running in any case). When they did the last live EE they had to bring in a huge amount of extra equipment. Not sure what a live episode achieves these days as they are hardly likely to go off script and start ad libbing a different story line (mind you there were days when all the soaps were live).

Compared to the last few months, this week's EastEnders ratings have been a pleasant surprise. Trying to build ratings up for Christmas is the most important thing now. Could a better rated Christmas be on the cards this year?

I think many actors prefer recording, more pressure with live episodes and not all like it.

Also in 2010 Corrie's live episode was technically better, no fluffs and polished. It just felt like a regular episode though and not live. The EastEnders live episode on the other hand had a couple of fluffs. Scott Maslen messing up his lines and Jake Wood caught on camera with his fingers down his throat stick out! But it also had energy and moved at a quick pace, it felt live and more exciting than the Corrie live episode to me.

Won't be an issue after the next few games as BT have taken all the live rights from ITV and Sky next year.

The Champions League is a bit niche in terms of viewer interest anyway. Apparently the same sort of size crowd turned up to watch Man City v Roma live last night as watched them play Sheffield Wednesday in the League Cup the week before. Well below the Premier League match day average.

I take it that ITV have decided to pull the plug on Scott and Bailey and relocate at a later date elsewhere.

During an ad break they just announced that tonight's episode is the 'last of the series' - even though it is billed as '4 of 8' in Radio Times and is in next week's RT listings too.

If so and not an error by the continuity announcer then Our Zoo finally has a victory - though a bit of a Pyrrich victory really - if it has caused ITV to take this drama out of the line of fire from it just for one week - given that Our Zoo ends next Wednesday.

Expect 7 million to watch the last episode of Our Zoo next week then - or, um, not.

Though on the up side it might just be enough to persuade the BBC to give it another series in a more family friendly shot if taking Scott and Bailey out of the schedule counts in terms of kudos.

Some big Champions League matches do hurt BBC1, often when you reach later stages and British teams are still present. I think in 2015 EastEnders could hold up better most Tuesdays when those matches disappear from ITV. I also expect ITV to be more competitive on Tuesdays.

If Scott & Bailey wasn't on tonight Our Zoo might have seen a boost. Moving it away from The Apprentice or just a mistake made in the trailer? If Scott & Bailey is being moved what replaces it?

BARB supply the raw data and are not at fault. Only Attentional tape-check and so only users of Attentional-supplied data will have tape-checked ratings.

It tends not to make a huge difference except where (for instance) a high-rated 30-min programme finishes early leading into a low-rated ad break/programme.

And can I add my thanks to Bushmills for giving us data - all data is appreciated.

Thanks Lewie!

That's a good rating for Doctors. Where did that come from? And BBC2 having a good evening between 8-10pm. I think it's the best channel of the five main ones at the moment.

I just checked both Digiguide and the Virgin EPG (which goes 2 weeks ahead) and both still show Scott and Bailey on next week.

So maybe it was an error but it was not in a promo trailer just the live voice over continuity announcer saying on Granada that tonight it was the last of the series.

As it is a Granada area show then she might know earlier than other announcers, I guess.

But it is what she said.

Why would ITV move Scott and Bailey? The only thing is they're running scared of The Apprentice and feel they can air the remaining episodes elsewhere where they will perform much better. But does that mean they're basically giving up on the Wednesday 9pm slot?

Unless they have a midweek episode of The X Factor to schedule I'm going to put it down as an announcement error.

Strong shares for EastEnders and Emmerdale last night. BBC Two had a good evening. CSI looks on the low side, as does the football.

ITV com is showing the Mirror Pride of Britain Awards next Tuesday 2000-2200 (but for one night only of course).Maybe the announcer was confused......

Possibly, would not be the first such error. If they mention it again then we will know as they would surely have had the mistake pointed out to them otherwise.

I can find nothing out there to confirm that Scott and Bailey is ending tonight. The show's Facebook page and the ITV press site appear still to be saying otherwise.

So it does look like it must have been a continuity announcer error.

Or I am going nuts.

Both possibilities.
Jaycee Dove
01-10-2014
Okay, I was able to at least prove I am not going nuts.

I wound back two hours on live replay just in time to catch the announcement at 10.29 am prior to the start of This Morning.

The announcer said exactly this:-

'Things get complicated for the ladies tonight in the last of the series of Scott and Bailey here at nine.'

So I was not imagining it.

But it still could be a mistake, of course.

I'd rather a live episode than another stunt (which are never as impressive as some fans make out), although the two seem to go hand in hand.
