The X Factor on the 11th October is now on from 8pm-10pm not 7:30pm as we were led to believe. So only 30minute clash with Strictly.

Holby City showing a bit of life and The One Show being rubbish at 7pm.
3.93m (22%) against Emmerdale is not rubbish. Two-thirds of a million above ITV's Champions' League broadcast.

Its showing this on ITV press centre which usually means the schedule is unlikely to change.

7pm The Chase
8pm The X Factor
10pm Through The Keyhole

When it is at 4.5m we'll talk. Earlier Champions League matches don't generate big ratings.

That's a pretty low rating for Tricked. Halved its audience in 1 week. It was against the reliable DTTB but still, that's a big drop.

Sanity prevails in terms of show length. 16 acts in two hours plus ads might be pushing it a bit though.

How long was first live show of series 8? That had 16 acts too.

Which proves the point, it got higher ratings than The Driver, and 400k less than Holby, despite facing opposition rating almost twice as much. Surely Holby should be doing more than "showing a bit of life" if that's the case.

Funny isnt it lots of complaining when we thought it was 2.5hrs long now is it long enough.
If it is cut to 2hrs it has another positive affect - less garbage spouted by Cowell & co.

Holby is nearly rating as low as Waterloo Road - time to put it out of its misery?

Thanks to BBC1 on Thursday's at 8pm, Emmerdale and POG Dogs will be getting a very easy ride with the flop DIY show and Waterloo Road returning soon. Should mean The Great Fire will get an easier ride with Crimewatch at 9pm.

So it did, presumably any benefit from splitting it was offset by the last half hour going up against Casualty. I also remember the opening was a bit odd as it started with Ant and Dec and the judges "backstage" discussing the series and linking into clips, with the show starting properly with the opening titles about fifteen minutes in. Although everyone mentions Sir Peter Waterman storming out, he didn't do that on air, it was reported he'd flounced off after the show rather than go to the party because he thought McManus was crap and somewhere along the line this has now become folklore that he did it on air.

The rugby thing didn't seem so bizarre at the time, a few years before they'd done An Audience With Lennox Lewis after his big Tyson fight and also did an Audience With-style show with Nigel Benn and Chris Eubank before they fought each other, both on a Saturday night. Given the Rugby World Cup had all been played during the day this was presumably a way to get some primetime benefit out of it. Unfortunately what I think sunk it was that earlier in the day England had played their first match after the World Cup live on BBC1, so people were probably all rugbyed out by 9.30.

At the time, with Pop Idol and Popstars alternating every year (and at the time a Popstars III was in development), The X Factor just seemed very much like 2004's talent show. It wasn't really any kind of risk because The X Factor came across as simply a talent show greatest hits with Cowell from Pop Idol and Walsh from Popstars, plus Kate Thornton had done Pop Idol Extra on ITV2.

But presumably because Cowell owned the format, and because the priority for ITV was now keeping hold of Cowell, Cowell decided that he just wanted to do The X Factor, so if they wanted Cowell they had to have The X Factor or nothing. I thought it was a bit of a shame at the time because Pop Idol had been a pretty elegant format and The X Factor always seemed a bit clunky in terms of how it all worked, and still does, really.

Of course, the Pop Idol format was still available and a few years back there was the suggestion C5 would buy it, but minus all the personnel, natch.
I think it's understandable that they didn't want to bring back Pop Idol without Simon Cowell. I think it also lost a lot of credibility when the second series didn't create any stars too. Weren't Ant & Dec busy doing IACGMOOH by 2005 too?

They were already doing it in 2003, but it was at a different time of the year then. I dunno if it needed to create a lot of stars because the first series of The X Factor did bugger all, to be honest. But it wasn't as much fun as the first one. It's still the talent show I've most enjoyed, however, the first series was really great.

Holby should be doing better and closer/over 5m and BBC1 could try and do better in the 7pm hour leading into EastEnders.

Both shows should be doing better. Neither impress me with their ratings. The One Show gets a free pass because it's variety with different features everyday. It's the same bloody programme on every single day. Somebody take that crap off and put something better on! Please! PLEASE!

You know what is so frustrating about TV currently? Programmes being padded out to fill longer timeslots and extra editions being put out. The lack of variety in primetime will drive viewers away.

We are currently in the bum numbing phase of Strictly with 2+ hour live shows. I know about this Saturday. I want to see if Strictly and X Factor have an hour long clash next Saturday.

BBC1 should be doing better weeknights at 7pm and on Tuesdays at 8pm. The One Show is reheated death.

Led to believe by ITV, it should be added, as that was the information they exchanged with other broadcasters most recently.
