Does not that just highlight that there is not enough programming for ITV2 and ITVBe?
So ITV's overall share is going to benefit even if ITV2 backpedals slightly. And if BBC Three does leave Freeview this time next year, then obviously that represents a huge opportunity to grow ITV2 and ITV Be. So any declines experienced in the next 12 months with ITV2 could easily be reversed the following year, and therefore it might be useful to experiment as much as possible in that time to see what works and what doesn't. So ideally by autumn 2015 when there's potentially going to be more floating viewers available, every viewer will have a better understanding of who ITV2 is for and who ITV Be is for. I'm more concerned with the inevitable failure of the hugely disappointing ITV Encore which has been such a missed opportunity by the broadcaster. A real half hearted attempt at a pay channel and it shows when it's rating worse than channels such as Animal Planet, Discovery +1 , Lifetime, Nicktoons, TCM and Watch+1, to name a few. It's still early days of course and no doubt ITV will point out that it wasn't a channel conceived purely with ratings in mind, but it's got a lot of work to do to even get on terms with Sky Atlantic. |

Scott & Bailey after BGT, Downton after The X Factor, Atlantis after Strictly, The Musketeers after CTM.
Our Zoo didn't even match any of these, even Atlantis had 5.5m I suspect Downton and Atlantis at 9 pm on a Wednesday would not have got the ratings they did whatever they followed. Plus Atlantis did not hold its ratings as it was not particularly good. At least Our Zoo is fairly stable (around 5.2/5.3 consolidated) and this matches viewer perceptions of its quality. For the BBC that should count more than a few hundred thousand extra viewers. Is that not why we fund them - to produce quality shows that other channels needing ad revenue could probably not risk doing? |

I can't see 5 dropping drama anytime soon but its apparent their current slate isn't working, I would stick with Wentworth for a while and I agree that the broadening of the drama hasn't especially with the non US dramas. Gotham should premiere well but whether it can stick remains to be seen.
I wouldn't rule out the possibility of them significantly reducing the amount of drama they broadcast on the main channel if things don't improve soon. 10PM is becoming increasingly harder generally (just ask Channel 4) and something that is going to run for weeks possibly months on end is more vulnerable than most, and at 9PM the issue has been that they start well but can't maintain it. The case for less drama is a a strong one: reality/factual rates better, usually is cheaper and is more likely to repeat well. And in terms of scripted content, comedy is going to be a better fit for Viacom generally with the obvious potential for linkup opportunities with Comedy Central. I don't see them abandoning the genre completely, but realistically do I see them screening several hours of new drama a week as was the case last month? No I don't. I rather think less is more sometimes anyway. If they could identify one or two fixed slots for US drama all year round and stick with it then that might produce better long term results. Quote:
The airing of Neighbours and Home and Away on Viva makes me wonder whether Viacom are considering merging Viva and 5*, to me, it would be good as 5* has struggled with competing with the likes of ITV2 and E4 and merging them and creating a new channel would help be competitive although I would move certain shows like The Walking Dead to 5USA.

Apparently Gotham is up against the season premiere of The Walking Dead on Fox. Apart from Game of Thrones, probably the worst pay TV show it could be up against. I would describe that as not ideal in terms of maximising audience.

I don't know about channel merging at this stage. I think C5+24 is more likely to be replaced before either Viva or 5*. I'm not sure what with exactly, but surely they could find something for this that would increase share by more than 0.1%. The many limitations of a +24 hour channel were exposed over the summer when day old episodes of BB/CBB were being watched by virtually nobody at the same time as the new episodes were on. I'd like to see 5Movies to compete with Film4 and Movie Mix, that would have an audience. |

I would also get the rights to more films, Disney films, Dreamworks etc. Put some real effort into making the channel a comedy, family, entertainment channel.

Gotham should premiere well but whether it can stick remains to be seen. They do have their work cut out as CSI is aging and The Mentalist is ending next year so there is going to gaps that need to be filled. If I were them, I would consider commissioning another original drama to along with Suspects with the aim of having more than one returnable series.
On the subject of drama on Channel 5 its a difficult road for them to walk at this point. On the one hand I'd say they should in essence double down on their strategy of broadening their slate of imports not just in terms of where they're buying them from but the genre of them as well but on the other hand its not a strategy that's found much success to date so its easy to make the case for doing a full reversal and getting more aggressive with US procedurals going forward. Its going to be interesting to see which road they opt to take although I suppose the more likely option is to chart some kind of middle ground between the two. I'd agree that adding another new original drama to their slate isn't a bad call either. And actually with Viacom behind them now I wonder if we might see an increase in home grown drama that can be sold be sold into the international market. Maybe now is the time to pull the trigger on CSI: London (or UK)? Quote:

ITV Encore was always going to be a difficult beast for them to launch without original content. Its just upmarket ITV3 at this point. I still like the basic concept of the channel its just become very clear they weren't really ready to launch it.

It's got a really strange setup, very low key owners in Square 1 Broadcasting (who used to run a dreadful babes on a sofa service called Smile TV) and supported by Sony. I don't know what sort of arrangement they have or how it came about, but Movie Mix is punching above its weight and with greater investment as part of a bigger network it could really thrive. |

No more Eastenders omnibus from April 2015: http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/soaps/ne...pril-2015.html Quote:
In a letter published by The Writer's Guild, he [Dominic Treadwell Collins, producer] wrote: "The BBC is today announcing that the EastEnders omnibus will cease from April 2015. This decision has been taken after much consideration and detailed analysis of the audience research."
He said that the "advent of PVRs and the wide availability of BBC iPlayer" has contributed to a decease in demand for the weekly catch-up broadcast. |

Viva 5? Its potentially quite a good idea really since both channels have struggled somewhat to define themselves and gain traction in an increasingly crowded market. Although Viva is a channel that has never really made any kind of sense to me at all. And actually with Viacom behind them now I wonder if we might see an increase in home grown drama that can be sold be sold into the international market. Maybe now is the time to pull the trigger on CSI: London (or UK)? Suspects has been critically acclaimed but I wouldn't want every drama on 5 to be like that although saying that, a improvised medical drama would be interesting to watch. I think adapting crime novels into series such as the Roy Grace series or Cooper and Fry would be a start since they would come with an audience who have read those books. I wouldn't be opposed to a British adaptation of CSI or NCIS but I wonder if it would be a bit late since the former is on its last legs. Quote:
Is there any reason why Viacom couldn't simply buy Movie Mix and improve that? It's already got a 0.4% share which isn't bad going considering it doesn't have big money owners and is a relatively tiny operation.

I take it last night Chicago Pd was the second part of a 2 part crossover with Chicago fire, always love to miss part 1 of a 2 part story (sarcasm mode), still I suppose the viewers of whatever Channel that shows Fire must be even more seething at missing part 2.

on the subject of the EE omnibus, I can see where there are coming from HOWEVER I would say that the 7 day catch up window based on the episode first airing may not be enough fo all.
I was recently in hospital for 8 days (ive been in a out for the past couple of months), and obviousy found downloaing the omnibus to my iPlayer very helpful to catch up on missed EE (the TV in the hospital, not being worth watching anything on), the omnibus airing keeps episodes on iPlayer for longer. I know there has been some talk of the viewing window being open to 30 days, but I dont know when that is happening. Still over all its no surprise given that its been shafted to late night Friday, not really helping anyone, in terms of live viewings. |

There's still a surprisingly strong market for the CSI brand internationally. CSI itself still sells very well internationally (and in domestic US syndication) and I suspect that's what will keep it on the air for another season or two. And its that strength that's made them feel CSI: Cyber is a worthwhile investment in strengthening and potentially diversifying the brand a little. How much of that interest would transfer to CSI: UK is an issue but I suspect there would be enough initial interest to make it at least worthy of consideration.
CSI I think would work in a different country with some adjustments, if Law and Order UK can work then I don't see why a CSI UK couldn't work, NCIS probably is harder because there isn't really a UK equivalent. |

Turning to the subject of the U.S. late night talk show shake up
It,s of no great surprise to me that Jimmy Fallon is absolutely storming it ratings wise eight months into his Tonight Show run he,s absolutely brilliant and he dares to do things no other chat show host would do Where do you think he,s succeeding and Conan O Brian failed after Seven months-and even that was a brave try by NBC IMO And now we know Stephen Colbert is stepping into David Letterman,s shoes after he retires from CBS at some point in the next year how do you think he'll do for them in ratings terms |

The final Late Show with Letterman hasn't been announced but I would not be surprised if it's around May 2015, there will be a huge build up to it and also to Colbert's first Late Show |

Perhaps Channel 5 should do a production and rights tie up with USA Network in a similar way that Sky have done with HBO.
USA Network produce some pretty good drama and along with their back catalogue, it could fill a scheduling void that Channel 5 are heading into. Co producing/financing and getting first run rights would lift their profile - they even have a channel already named for it 5 USA for the repeated shows.

US ratings: http://tvseriesfinale.com/tv-show/we...f-laura-34188/
Weak start for Stalker with a 2.0 but slot winning for this week at least, following on from the season premier of Criminal Minds (2.7). Almost everything else down from premier week with Blackish falling the most but still with a decent 2.5, it must try stabilise now though, Fox was stable week on week (still crap though) as was Nashville. |
