What shows does TNT have now that are hits?”

Major Crimes, Rizzoli and Isles, The Last Ship, Falling Skies, Murder in the First and Perception. They've got a few things in development which means that the underperforming shows will get the boot

And that's a good sign I think! Personally I hope TXF wins the "war" this year. Purely because fundamentally, at least in this thread, it's all panto, and because Strictly's had a strong few years and I think it's the X Factor's "turn again."

That's not to say I don't agree the formats are bit old. But then look at IAC, The Apprentice, etc - they're all in their 12th, 8th etc years. And look at IAC, it smashed it last year. Last year’s 13th series was the 2nd most watched of all, after Series 3, an astonishing result.”

I believe IAC series 13 was its most watched series ever. Series 3 averaged 11.03m, and series 13 somewhere around 11.2/3m I think!?

The numbers are going to be horrible for this final run of episodes wherever Fox air it so I'm saying they have to prioritise getting new shows onto the schedule midseason and giving them the best possible chance to launch well. Short of scheduling Glee on Monday's (possibly in double bills) when Gotham is on hiatus and in between Sleepy Hollow ending and The Following starting I'm not entirely sure where else they put it at this point.

Where is this comedic skill when they commission sitcoms?

I didn't even realise The X Factor was on again tonight. What are they doing with these utterly random Friday episodes?

I'm amazed it lasted this long to be honest. Poor ratings, not cheap and increasingly off brand for the network is not a good combo. Larry Hagman's untimely death probably brought it another season if we're being brutally honest about it. But yeah I'd agree that Franklin & Bash and Legends will soon be following it out the door.

Murder in the First didn't do that well from what I remember so I'd be concerned about its second season performance particularly if they move it away from Major Crimes. Also worth remembering that Falling Skies ends next year although I suspect they'll be banking on the Teen Titans series they have in development to replace it. And they've got The Librarians series starting soon which should do relatively well for them since the TV movies its spinning out of usually performed well.

Scott & Bailey has always consolidated well, but the overnights just aren't good enough. I think this will definitely be its final series, each year the ratings have dropped. ITV have got 4 series out of it, that's good for a drama.

Thanks, thought it was

Its incredible really that a reality show like IAC in 13 series can get its highest rating series ever, and the opener on 13.5m is still going to be difficult to beat.

I suspect it will e, like most things down 1m on that figure.

I think if the leads are happy to continue it will return, its an 8x60 series and let's face it they don't have many of them knocking about. With Lewis looking to end and a sport less Summer to fill there will be plenty of room, if they did air it in the autumn next year it could take the Friday slot if they wanted to try and give it a Corrie boost too. But its pretty much the only 9pm drama that's worked on Wednesdays when you consider both Light fields and Whitechapel died on their arses.

In fact if Grantchester is a success and returns they could do worse than let that keep the Monday slot, and have Doc Martin and Scott and Bailey taking Wednesday/Thursdays that leaves Fridays to let something new have a Corrie boost?

Franklin and Bash's renewal last season surprised me as it wasn't rating well. Sony must have offered a licensing cut for a renewal but it won't save them this time.

TNT has enough shows in development to cover the cancellation of three shows, the Titans series will be interesting because they'll be restricted to what characters they can use due to the various DC films and TV shows.

My general assumption when they renewed Franklin & Bash last time around was that they were renewing it to get them through their transition period. As a network TNT is in the midsts of a very obvious shift in focus and direction toward more action based and genre driven output in comparison to the procedurals that had been the underpinning of the network for a while. Its an obvious out reach to male viewers (another reason Dallas was just never going to last and why I'm not convinced they're going to stick with Murder in the First for the long haul) but they couldn't just go dark while they put these new focus shows through development and built up a new slate of originals. Franklin & Bash was just there to get them through. With that in mind its hard to see much reason to keep it around.

Some consolidated data in this week's Broadcast (inc +1):

Downton opener, 21 Sep
10.71m (41.0%)
* volume down -1.24m or -10.4% on 2013's premiere audience of 11.95m (42.1%)
* but share was only down -1.1 points or -2.6%
* disparity due to total TV audience being down -2.3m year-on-year
* ABC1 Adults: 6.3m (47% share, skew approximately 59%)
* down -7% in volume but just -2.7% in share
* record high rating remains 12.44m (41.2%) on 6 November 2011

Our Girl opener, 21 Sep (opposite Downton)
5.22m (19.4%)
* compares with 6.31m (22%) for the pilot on Sunday 24 March 2013
They're saying 2.8m 16-34s this time around, but that can't be right.

To be fair, those are the figures on the Series 13 Wikipedia page (well, 11.11m/10.63 is). I assume the series-by-series ratings came from another part of Wikipedia?

EDIT: I dug this out of the archive:

The Wikipedia author was missing a +1 rating that they couldn't obtain from the BARB site, so that probably explains the discrepancy.

I'd have thought more like 0.8m.

Well, certainly not a 16-34 skew of anywhere near 54%! They've giving the same skew to By Any Means as well. They must have meant ABC1 Adult skews which would make sense. Smacked bottoms at Broadcast Towers.

Not to mention ratings this season have been awful.

TNT seems to following what HBO, FX, AMC etc have been doing for ages and that is producing or coproducing their shows which mean if a show is a hit, they'll get more of the revenues. HBO has loosened up recently as Open which didn't get picked up for series was produced by Fox 21 and The Leftovers is by WBTV but owning or co-owning shows has become more prevelant especially on cable, not so much broadcast, A&E cancelling Longmire was a recent example since they didn't own it and it was old skewing compared to the rest of the lineup

Something else I dug out, the top 10 consolidated audiences for unique programmes on each terrestrial channel in 2011. The tables include +1.

It gives the true timeshift for each programme as well which I find interesting. The Royal Wedding timeshifted by +1.1%. All three charting films on Channel 5 timeshifted by around +3%. The CSIs were quite big timeshifters then, now even more so.

EDIT: Ha! The New Year fireworks timeshifted by +4.1% (+0.42m), to 10.67m.
