The 21:00 hour on BBC One averaged 3.32m, down -3.21m from Strictly last week, and yet X Factor only improved by +0.49m.

I've watched Eastenders for the first time in years this week, and it has actually been good. Perhaps its finally turning a corner, I still think the ratings for all soaps are pretty pisspoor though.

It really should have been up by at least a million on last week. But we've seen poor figures followed by good this year and vice versa. We'll see what happens tonight.

Well there's life in the old dog yet. That's really good to see it having a really strong week. Monday could do quite well, shame about the tuesday clashes. Why can't ITV split Emmerdale and put the second half hour on at 8pm, that would kill holby and be beneficial to them. You can't kill EE by clashing one day of the week.

EastEnders ahead of Corrie, after the last few years on a friday, I never expected to see that.

Its been a really good week for EE.
Overnights 7.06m/6.95m/6.67m/7.13m while last year was 7.02m/7.02m/6.5m/6.07m.
More interestingly CS last year hit 9m on the Monday and was well over 8m all week while ED had 2 eps over 7m with the others high 6m . This week both have fallen across the week CS to around 7m and ED to around 6m.
ED ratings have fallen back quite quickly after the better week - maybe EE will too?

As a consequence, X Factor was up in share week-on-week by +14%, but in volume by +8%.

So 6.95m average across the week, up from 6.65m last year.

In Emmerdale the Charity storyline took an immediate backseat, she's barely been seen this week, focusing on less exciting storylines instead. It's back with a bang in two weeks though, so should get another boost then. EastEnders seems to be going straight into another big storyline, with the aftermath of this week still present, so that should keep hold of the audience, depending on the effect of the clash.

I think it's a valid one - as I said before, people on here are far more savvy than most in regards to changes in the schedule yet I've seen a handful state they didn't realise it was on last night. My parents only knew because I told them - they thought last week was a one off. Repeat that across the board with people who don't follow the schedules quite so closely and this is what you get.

As I said before, for me it should have been a million higher but let's see how tonight and tomorrow does week-on-week to determine how many people have switched off deliberately.

Terrific rating for EastEnders, and it's been a long while since anyone was able to say that. First time it's figures have been a positive surprise since Easter. Good to see a revival after all the pessemistic talk about its future. They may be down, but healthy soaps are still vital to both major broadcasters - and it's something the BBC has clearly acted upon, to their credit.

Poor for X Factor, but it's really not a surprise. Friday is a terrible day for shiny floor entertainment and the whole thing seems woefully thought out by ITV. I bet they won't go trying it again.

Thanks for the figures. Over a million less people watching television this week to last... the effect of first Friday since payday for many? The awareness that it's supposed to be the only decent evening of the weekend? The Strictly effect as many of BBC One's additional viewers switched off?

Poor for X Factor but no surprise. No point screaming crisis as it's not like it is putting in these figures in its normal Saturday/Sunday slots. These Friday episodes haven't worked ratings wise especially as they've had bugger all promotion.

If they want a third episode again they should do Mondays instead (probably at 8pm to avoid disrupting drama).

D.M.N., do you have the rating for the EastEnders omnibus? I actually watched it last night, from start to finish.

It ran 24:10 to approx 26:08, but the rating will be up to 26:00 of course.

First and foremost EastEnders needs to boost BBC1 not iPlayer or BBC3. That is THE most important thing for EastEnders to do. Said that for months. Now it is doing it again. I also said that getting 7m on BBC1 is what it should be doing, not just 7m when you add BBC3 numbers. It did that.

I haven't watched much of the X factor this year but I always watch the episodes where they select the finalists at the judge's house. I was sorry to have missed it. I really did not know it was on last night. I thought they only put it on last Friday to compete with the dancing show

Fantastic, and to beat not only corrie but Xfactor that would have been unheard of a couple of years ago.

Suprisied to see Strictly widen the gap slightly in the officials, I expected Xfactor to time shift more than Strictly but still around 1.6m for both is good going.

By my calculations, ITV didn't even get an extra ad break out of airing X Factor 's Bootcamp across three nights, despite adding 20 minutes to the scheduled runtime. Including +1:

Some caveats:
- total TV audiences generally have been down year-on-year, although in this case not by much (23.14m across X Factor's slots, down from 23.25m in 2013.) The fall in share (-12%) was almost as high the fall in volume (-13%).
- obviously the year-on-year comparisons are affected by the longer clashes, but the Friday one was an active decision by ITV (and indeed the longer Saturday clash this year was also their decision).
- the crucial audience is presumably 16-34 which is what we think the show is sold on to advertisers. This demo may not have fallen in line with the overall rating.
- this pattern may be more creatively suitable for the show, and thus might benefit it in that way.

Having said all that, what ITV actually did was move two ad breaks away from the highest-viewing night of Sunday, and one from Saturday, and put those three on Friday where they rated a lot less.
