Your comments are intruguing . I would gladly have another Rose figure in the show. I miss Billies central role. I feel Moffat has veered towards a too male audience lately and ignored some of the teen girl audience. I don't know just my opinion. But Russell seemed to be able to tap into real life speech with most of his characters. It helped he had written for "soap" I think which kinda got people watching that never ever considered "Doctor Who" and created a popular audience figure. I think Moffat is very good too just different and more offbeat and "Sherlocky" in his approach to who is watching. He doesn't really care, he just seems to write. But its good for the audience to feel that the programme is relatable. The Tyler family were very good at settling a family audience into "Doctor Who" from the beginning. Its a happy balance, but I don't want to see the programme become a cult show.

Why do you feel SCD results aren't a "must watch like a singing show might be?" I watch SCD and I can tell you that it is indeed a must watch to see who is going to leave. And around 10m viewers agree with me. But yes, I agree. Sunday Night at the Palladium is a show capable of getting 4-4.5m each week - as long as Jimmy Carr doesn't host the first one. It's a show I will definetely record and watch, if only to make comparisons to the original.

I'm guessing its not going out live (?), but you can get tickets to be part of the audience for the 6 Sundays from 7th September to 12th October on SRO Audiences.

Sundays could be a bit packed with the need to schedule XF, Palladium & Downton.

The palladium show will be interesting to see if a big branded old style variety show can work in a variety dead era. If it is not against SCD results I would imagine they might be hoping a few more than 4.5 million.
Is it going to be live? Not sure if it was mentioned in the piece.

If it works we might see more than 6 next year.

Paul O;Grady FTLOD press pack is up on ITV press centre so that would suggest it will start its 11 episode run after Harbour Lives finishes. Last night's episode was 5/8 so that should mean O' Grady Dogs starts on the 11th September and finishes on 20th November.

Its amazing isn't it. That slot features factual programmes that pulls in around 2.2m-2.5m despite a safe slot, and then one popular programme can then pull in 5m in the same audience avoided slot.

Yes, it is a strange thing that an audience avoids a slot all year but then tunes in their masses to watch Battersea Dog's Home with Claudia Winkleman - I mean Paul O'Grady's For The Love of Dogs! Joking aside, the appeal of this show is that Paul genuinely cares about the creatures shown. He loves animals more than people and that is something a lot of viewers can resonate with.

Provisional schedule for week beginning 30th August out - Doctor Who down for 7:45pm (45 minutes long), ITV have three hour long TBAs 7pm-10pm, the middle of which will almost certainly be X Factor (although I can't see it only being an hour.)

England vs Norway friendly on Wednesday 3rd September, pushing Corrie to 7pm and giving ITV an excuse to clash Emmerdale with EE on the Tuesday. (If this is the week of EE's fire, I can definitely see them doing their best to avoid that.) Our Zoo should hopefully still be able to do well against the football, helped by the GBBO lead in.

H of De Vil, Harbour Lives actually finishes on Friday 29th August, they're airing two episodes that week, so FLOTD will probably be back on the 4th.

Ah right thanks So it should start on the 4th Sept and end 13th Nov.

That's nonsense. Strictly results are a must see for the viewers of the show. They've matched X Factor results on several occasions and sometimes passed them.

The Palladium is a very good idea as variety shows were a huge part of ITV's schedule until the mid eighties when they fell out of fashion. In a way SCD has elements of it and I'm sure it can do well as there are still millions of viewers who fondly remember variety.

When I say 'must -see' I mean its not going to create quite the same impact an eviction on a singing show would. The celebs on SCD aren't going to go on to become big ticket selling dancers.

Don't get me wrong I'm not saying SCD isn't 'must see' for those who watch it, but it doesn't quite have the same impact XF does when a singer is sent home.

With all due respect, I believe viewers of SCD get a great deal of emotion and feel impacted when a favourite celebrity leaves. It is non sensical to compare XF contestants and SCD contestants and then to describe XF contestants as having some kind of Godly greatness of importance when it comes to the viewer vote. I assume you've never seen a SCD result show. If you had you would know it is very emotional once you get to the dreaded dance off.

Judge Rinder has creeped into ITV player top 10. It appears it has resonated with the Jeremy Kyle audience.

Maybe it's part of a clever plan by ITV to trick the OAP's into thinking it's Sunday so that they don't turn over to watch Doctor Who! Clever them ITV bigwigs, clever! You can hear them now: "When did Jonathan Ross join Downton Abbey? They've brought it right up to date. But where's Maggie Smith?"

Interesting chart in Broadcast this week, the top twenty programmes this year on STV. Number one is an episode of Corrie but, interestingly, not the episode of Corrie that's number one in the UK as a whole. The number one UK episode was on Monday 20th January, with 11.03m viewers, but the most watched episode in Scotland was on Thursday 29th May, with 1.03m.

Number two in the STV chart is Britain's Got Talent, but again a different one from the network, in fact the first episode on Saturday 12th April with 930,000 viewers. What's particularly interesting is that this episode didn't have the benefit of the FA Cup semi-final it had in the rest of the UK, just a load of filler. One of those fillers, Vet School Bits, actualy gets in the top twenty, at number fourteen with 550,000 viewers. That's one of only two STV shows to get into the chart, the other is an episode of Scotland Today on Monday 20th January with 520,000, at number twenty.

Number three in the STV chart is the Uruguay vs England game that's number one in the network chart. Vera, Saturday Night Takeaway and Dancing On Ice all appear in the STV chart (in the top ten, to boot) but don't appear in the UK-wide chart. Lots of drama in the chart and of course a couple of years ago you wouldn't have got any. So quite interesting.

One other bit in Broadcast is Damian Kavanagh, the Beeb's Head of Daytime, talking about how C4 are saying their daytime figures are down becasue BBC1 is no longer showing CBBC. He points out that, since that went, BBC2 is up, ITV1/2/3/4 are up, Dave is up and C5 is level, and it's only C4 that are down. He also says that both BBC1 and BBC2 are up year-on-year from 2013 to 2014, both in years without CBBC, BBC2 doing so with zero money.

He points out the decline of Countdown and Deal Or No Deal and says "I would venture that the reason for the decline is the existence of the same two programmes from 2006 to 2014. The shows ain't working, that's the problem."

When I did my book on Saturday night telly a few years back we asked various people what their favourite Saturday night show was. Lionel Blair said "Sunday Night at the London Palladium".

Of course I'm serious. I'm not saying TXF results aren't tense or exciting, but they're going to be to XF fans aren't they? I'm not an XF fan so therefore I find the SCD results equally as tense and exciting. You get to see celebrities in a different light on Strictly. You get a rare chance to see their vulnerabilities. There's a great air of comaraderie amongst the competitors and you get to link yourself to a favourite or two. So it gets quite tense when one of your favourites are in the dance off.

The show takes place on a Sunday at the Palladium (as per the recording dates), but doesn't mean it has to be shown on that night does it ? It's like the brand name.

I think Damian Kavanagh is saying what everyone else is saying about Channel 4's afternoons except Channel 4, a schedule dominated by worn out and dying shows. Countdown might have a sentimental value, it was Channel 4's first programme, but surely this isn't enough to keep it going and £ 3 million could be saved by getting rid of Noel Edmonds box opening tedium that seems to have been around forever.
