Overreaction? I'm fairly sure last night was New Tricks' lowest ever overnight rating across all 11 series! This is despite the fact that Monday has always been its best day by far. The competition was hardly that tough, Long Lost Family would have managed 4 million at best and CBB is pretty unlikely to have dented New Tricks. New Tricks has faced lots of ITV dramas in the past and rated a damn sight better than it did last night. It's a real shocker of a launch for it and frankly I'm surprised there hasn't been more of a reaction. If Doc Martin launched with a rating like that we'd never hear the end of it!
Overnight ratings are becoming pretty pointless. My 85 year old Dad rang last night and said I've just realised New Tricks is a new one tonight. I've set it to record the series. When you've got folks just short of 86 watching TV on record services shows like New Tricks are going to suffer in overnights.

I don't think, as I have said the promotion was very good at all. It got a week of very sparse little trailers. Not particularly eye catching.

Digital Spy's reporter thought NT was a repeat. Must have just assumed that was the case when he saw the number. Says it all really !

CBB dominating the headlines so the story of the night as Score rightly said is being overlooked.

Looks like most channels were down at 9PM though, so a strange evening by all accounts.

Or like many people just not known it was a new one!

It was a competitive night with football, so not strange at all.

ITV and C4 lost 1.5M viewers between them week-on-week. Yikes!

Seriously, how is CBB being approximately 0.4M down on last summer's launch the main story ?

Good point about the Sky football, forgot about that. All over in the first half though, wasn't it?

Did people seriously not know that NT was a new one? To be fair I can't say I'm too surprised because the promotion was virtually nonexistent. Just the Radio Times and a short trailer which began showing a matter of days before the series started.

Oh no, you're not a Chelsea fan are you Ken ?

I hate Chelsea and Mourinho with a passion so I certainly would have lost interest at HT with a scoreline that offered little hope they would be beaten.

at New Tricks. 5.8m is very low indeed and as Score says, definitely the story of the night. To be down so heavily and to post possibly its lowest overnight rating ever (?) is beyond poor. Was not expecting that. I believe the word used on here the other day was 'murder' the opposition. Obviously not the case.

Solid for Emmerdale which is very good right now. Corrie on the low side. CBB did what I expected whilst The 100 is still doing good on E4.

The New Tricks team were on the covers of virtually every listings magazine, big features on Tamzin in some of the Sunday papers and she was on Breakfast.I also saw quite a few trails on BBC1. Not sure what else you can do to promote it, have Dennis reading the news perhaps ?

Exactly. If anything CBB is the least eventful 9pm rating of last night as it basically did what was expected of it, whereas everything else seemed to fall down. It was a rare night where everything had something to dent each other. CBB will have dented Royal Marine Command School a fair bit, whilst New Tricks will have dented Long Lost Family (although +1 saved a bit of face for LLF). I suspect NT would have been over 6m without LLF there and CBB might have been 2.5m+ without Command School there. Everyone seemed to take the shine off everyone else last night in what was quite an odd night.

New Tricks is still the main story though. I was expecting ITV and C4 to take a hit last night and whilst I wasn't expecting a vintage rating for New Tricks 5.8m is way below expectations and cannot solely be pinned on other shows denting it as NT has faced tough competition before and come off a lot better than it did last night. It seems clear that there were other affects at work here, which seem to be that the new cast doesn't seem to have the same appeal as the previous one, as is often the case when most of a show's core cast decides to leave. It'll be interesting to see what happens from here.

That's an awful share for EastEnders. Not even close to 30% What's happened to it in the past week or so?

Emmerdale doing well and Corrie poor but stable.

Timeshift won't have increased massively in a year though.

Yeah, fair enough. But for the journalist to report NT as a repeat is just shoddy. How could they not have known? Yes it got a low rating but surely that wasn't all he/she was going on?

To interject some common sense here, New Tricks was in a competitive Monday slot, out of its cosy Tuesday night timeslot. CBB, LLF, RM Commando School, Horizon, The 100, Chelsea football. In short there is a finite number of viewers. Over 23m were watching TV at 9pm...!!

New Tricks 25%
Horizon 7.9%
Long Lost Family 15.0%
RM Commando 6.2%
CBB 11.9%+
The 100 3.0%%

The above 6 shows accounted for around 70% of viewing in the 9pm hour, we still have not see the Chelsea rating. For New Tricks to have launched with an impressive rating - around 25+ million viewers would have had to watch TV as live. Undoubtably the cast changes affected return viewers. Let us see the officials in 13 days to see if viewers have permanently deserted.

Ok so my overeaction comment might about NT might have been an overeaction.
So can somebody post the overnights for the last series so we can compare ? Still agood overnight figure and lets see the consolidated figures before you all right it off.

It does seem a low launch rating for New Tricks. The series is notable for normally beating Eastenders in the overnight ratings to be BBC1's top rating show, so quite surprising to see it so low. I hadn't seen any trailers for the show's return but did know about it from reading this thread and from a tv paper review.

3rd contestant confirmed for SCD - This Morning's showbiz reporter (and former BB contestant) Alison Hammond.
That's to add to The Saturdays' Frankie Bridge (formerly Frankie Sandford, married footballer Wayne Bridge) and British tennis coach (and Andy's mum) Judy Murray.

Pleased for Two Tribes - it would be natural if Pointless fans switch to BBC2 at 6pm for more Richard Osman, and there was good banter between host and contestants in yesterday's opening episode.

Most journalists don't understand much about TV and watch it even less. A couple of years ago a TV writer on the Daily Mirror praised the BBC for making Downton
