Scottish Independence: Let's have an honest debate.

The title of the thread is so insipid.
It's like the Independent Police Complaint Commission. The independence part is only there to made you think it is. When the truth is it isn't.
"Let's have an honest debate" implies there was a dishonest debate prior to it.

Nosey people, specifically my dad.
Whenever I get a text or a letter/parcel through he'll immediately speak up "Oh, what's that then?", "Who's that from?"
I want to say "None of your f*cking business", but I don't want to offend him lol, so I usually just say it's nothing and walk off.

Whenever my mum comes round at Christmas or following a birthday she takes it upon herself to read through all the cards on the mantle piece.

Most mothers do that.

The front door from our house to the driveway has a round knob which you just turn and then you can open the door.
On the inside, there is a smaller gizmo in the centre of the round knob which when in the horizontal position stops anyone from twisting the round knob to open the door, (from either side.)
When we leave the house, we twist this gizmo to the vertical position, turn the knob to open the door, and automatically turn it back to horizontal before pulling the door closed behind us.
That way, the knob cannot be turned from the outside to gain entry, it has to be opened via a Yale key.
No matter how much you impress this on my wife's chavvy brother, his wife, his kids, or his grandkids, they INVARIABLY don't do it.
This means that whenever one of them has been around, and then leaves the house via the door which is on the ground floor of our 3 storey house, one of us has to either accompany them to the door, or at the very least go down the stairs and check it after they have gone.

When people use my name every time they speak to me, even if there's no one else around they could be addressing. Especially in private texts sent through computers (including phones).

That Royal Mail won't let their postman leave letters and parcels which are too big for my letterbox but which don't need a signatuer, won't leave these things in my safe place - namely in front of my Flat front door (I'm a tower block dweller). Other couriers such as MyHermes and Yodel are more than happy with doing that and with all the security cameras around this IS a safe place and I've not had anything go missing. But Royal Mail just give me the NO.
So now should I find a "sorry we missed you" card I've got to take it 5miles away to redeem it. Guess I need to eBay a large letterbox thingie.
(btw: leaving it with a neighbour or giving a 2nd address is a no-no and I don't fancy the "take it to a nearby Post Office" option dammit, I want them left by my door. Simples. Gives them less work to do, no need to be carrying the weight around whilst they complete their route, no need to the items to take up space at the delivery office, no need for them to take up time serving me when I go in. Feels like there'd be winners all around, but no, they just say no. Darn it.

Speaking of odd places, my cousin once had a massive yellow spot inside her outer labia.

She didn't want to go to her GP as she was too embarrassed. Came to me for help. I didn't know what to say except suggested some acne cream. Turned out she wanted me to help her squeezing it. Nope. Nope nope nope nope. Not a chance in hell. Cue: a fight. In the end she did it herself.

This was long before the Internet, which would have been useful. We were around 16 at the time.

When you see on eBay something you'd like to buy but need to ask the seller a question first, which you do, but whilst waiting for a reply you continue searching and find another one on eBay that would also fit your needs if the first one doesn't work out, but you'd need to ask this seller a question too before you can buy it. So do you wait until the 1st seller has responded before you think about questioning seller #2, or put in your question now knowing full well that if #1 returns a then you'll be buying that one and so you'll be putting #2 through the hassle of finding the answer and replying and getting all hopeful that their item will FINALLY be sold, only to either get no response from me or a one that basically amounts to "hey, thank for the reply but I'm buying someone-elses, sorry ducky".

And knowing my lucky by the time #1 has got back to me with a I'll find #2 has sold it.

Unfortunately some backend software doesn't like that.

I got rid of it -it's as dead as a dodo now.

Today I'm annoyed at my friend who is being moody with me cus SHE cancelled on me last week.
I told her I was a bit irritated about that and now she's playing the victim. I've been nice enough to let it go (water under the bridge and that), and ask to meet up and she won't speak to me.

At a pedestrian crossing, people who press the button as may times as they can, as fast as they can, until the green man appears.
YOU ONLY NEED TO PRESS THE BUTTON ONCE !

^there is logic behind this apparent madness.

Let's say after pressing the button once it takes 10s to change.
However if you press the button a whole bunch of times for, say, 4s then it now only takes 6s to change. Sorted !! The longer you press it for the shorter you have to then wait. QED.

Haha, when I was younger there was a "thing" going round that if you pressed the button loads of times, it would fool the crossing into thinking there were loads of people waiting to cross the road, so it would get to the green man quicker.

But then we realised that was silly, and that the controllers would have realised that people would just keep pressing the button to cheat the system - so we would then press the button several times in a random order as if to fool it even more that more people were turning up at the crossing.

Not once did it cross our minds that there wasn't someone in a control room counting how many times the button had been pressed and thinking "well the button's been pressed 16 times so therefore there must be 16 people waiting to cross the road, I'd better change the lights quick!".

I did that recently because on my way back home there's a pedestrian crossing where for some reason it doesn't give you any way of knowing of if it's been pushed so I keep pushing it till it goes green

along with the "fact" that Bobby McFerrin (he of Don't Worry Be Happy fame) had killed himself - though checking out your ages methinks that was probably something your Dad heard in the playground. - Darn it I'm old.

You're lucky - my dad used to open everything that came to the house. After I left home he continued to do it with my mother's mail. He's one of the "It's my house..." brigade
