What about the other chat show hosts? Some of them might have been known from other things. Some may have worked themselves up from guest hosts to be the main host. Some may have started in the late late night slot and then been promoted to the flagship show.
Same with actors. Who knew who Hugh Laurie was? Even the producer thought he was American when he did his screentest.”
I’m not saying it matters that next to no one in the US knows who James Corden is, and neither were the Americans I was talking to, just that it was somewhat surprising because there was this assumption that the replacement host would be a well know face.
You’re right, sometimes networks can pick an unknown person that they think has potential and make a star out of them. Equally they can do this and fail miserably. Its a risk that may or may not pay off.
Ferguson was already known in the US when he started the ‘Late Late Show’ due to his 7 years on ‘The Drew Carey Show’, but he was considered a bit of an outsider for getting the talk show gig. A better example would be Conan O’Brien, picked by NBC to replace David Letterman on ‘Late Night’ in 1993 and completely unknown to audiences (due to the fact all his major work had been as a writer). After a very rocky start the risk paid off and he’s still a successful talkshow host today.

I suspect given the evidence there must have been at least discussions between CBS and James Corden in regards to him being the new host, even if they weren’t as final as the press suggested.
One thing is for sure, Craig Ferguson leaves on 19th December. If CBS are going to have a new show in place in January they’ll need to announce their plans soon.
Or maybe they want to launch the new ‘Late Late Show’ when they launch the new ‘Late Show’ later in 2015, and will therefore run Ferguson repeats until then. But they are going to be practically giving viewers away to NBC’s ‘Late Night’ if they choose to do that.
