I was watching a show last night and there was a chef on who said her menu is just all her favourite meals. Nothing pretentious, she just wants to cook what she likes to eat. Fair enough.

One of her favourite dishes is tinned sardines as it reminds her of when she was a student.

So on her menu there is a dish of tinned sardines (served in the tin), with some biscuits/crackers and a dollop of mustard.

How much would you pay for tinned sardines at a restaurant?

She charges $5 for it!

If it's not pretentious then it's definitely taking the piss

Isn't tinned food highly prized in Spain amongst others? This is presumably a bit different but in Barcelona certainly you can pay a fortune for tinned food.

Is it? My in-laws live near Barcelona and we visit twice a year. I can't say I've looked closely at the prices of tinned food, but certainly the Catalonian supermarkets have plenty of tinned food on the shelves. Why would tinned food be prized? Canning isn't an expensive or complicated process.

Interesting article, thanks!

Not all their tinned goods are of the gourmet variety though. You also get the bog-standard fare.

Oh yeah, i'm sure you do. But the tinned seafood thing is a bit weird isn't it?

I buy Ortiz tinned tuna and it makes John West taste like cat food in comparison. Yes it's a lot more expensive but it is line caught and hand packed. It's got to the stage where I can't eat any other tinned tuna, the taste is that good to me. The Spanish will have it as a treat now and again which is the way to eat IMO. More quality but have it less often. I would rather have a fresh organic free-range chicken once a month than a 3 quid battery specimen once a week.

I've seen tinned squid and octopus in supermarkets over here (Sainsburys iirc)
And tinned mussels, smoked oysters, clams.

There seems to be a lot of tapas/meze style food about too like artichokes, giant beans, stuffed peppers, stuffed olives and vine leaves.

Tinned tuna generally seems to have gone up a lot in price over the last few years and its not good quality either
Might try this Ortiz brand and leave the John West for the cat - she enjoys it anyway
