External HDD for Samsung Smart TV
Will be getting a Samsung Smart TV (UE32H5500) for the bedroom soon. Would like to connect a HDD so I can record/live rewind things from the Samsung planner.
Now, the e-manual I downloaded says it only supports external HDD's, not flash drives. But what I want to know, is... Does it support 'portable' HDD? ie drives that have no external power, that take their power from the USB? Or do I have to get one with an external plug. Thank you. |

The manual recommends a minimum spin speed of 5,400 rpm, to me that suggests a portable drive, one that can be unpowered. It will also need to be USB 2.0 compliant.
Don't think you'll go far wrong with a WD My Passport - under £50 for 500GB. |

To be honest it isn't that good for regular use as they use their own format for the drive so you can only view recordings on the tv. But a 32gb usb stick is good enough if you just want to record the odd thing when it clashes with your main recorder. |

Thanks guys. I already have a 500gb Seagate portable and a high speed 32GB high speed flash drive, so will try both when the TV is set up (will be a little while yet).
It is a bedroom TV, so it would probably be used at most 1-2 hours a night if that. It's mainly just to record the odd program that will be on earlier so I can watch before I go to sleep. So the limitations of the PVR functionality shouldn't be a major issue I wouldn't think. It's disappointing that the Samsung TV doesn't have a dual tuner though? So I can't record 1 channel and watch another. Does anyone know if I can record to the HDD whilst watching a different previously recorded programme from the same HDD? That would be very disappointing if you couldn't at least do that. |

When ever I'm watching a video file on another usb stick in a different port, the tv always asks me if I want to carry on watching the video or if I want to record the programme I have set up to record. |

That's why manufacturers make a range of tvs. You pick the one that does what you want it to do. For example, more expensive sets have two (or more) tuners that allow you to record one program while watching another. You should have told the salesman what you were going to do with the tv and hoefully you would have got the right advice.
Or online - you should have looked at the specs. |

Looked at the specs, and am quite happy it will suit my needs as a bedroom TV.
Thanks. |

I've used a hdd on a Samsung D6530 and had to reformat it 3 times as the TV refused to recognise it. So my advice would be not to store very much on it.
As to 2 tuners in a tv, you are far better off with a pvr. |
