I've just noticed that Sarah Phelps is praising Gillian Wright and calling Jean and Stacey very special on her Twitter. DTC has favourited her tweets.

Do you think Sarah might return to EE one day?

No. She's had discussion with fans about Sharon as well. Like Sharon, Stacey and Jean were characters she was closely involved in.

I can see her maybe returning to write a special like maybe the 5000th episode or maybe returning in the future 1 day.

She's a class act but sadly probably outgrown EE. She also wrote The Crimson Fields. She wrote a lot of the Watts Mark II stuff. Den's return episode was amazing IMO. If she had written Sharon's return I believe it would have been another classic.

I think she may well be back for a couple of episodes if the right story is suggested to her. She seems very pally with all the EE production crew at the moment.

I actually hope rather than return as writer she is a future exec producer of the show.

That sounds good! The question is does a great writer make a great exec?

While we are on the subject of EE writers. What was the name of the writer who wrote the Kat/Zoe two hander back in 2001? That to this day remains my favourite EastEnders episode.

Well she exec produced The Crimson Field so has the experience now. I guess it would be a risk worth taking. If Sarah did ever apply I doubt they would turn her down!

Tony Jordan wrote all four episodes of that reveal week I believe.

I would be very happy of Sarah was the next Exec Producer after Dominic because like him she knows the show very well and has a passion for it.

That's another amazing episode, probably my second or third favourite. I would assume Tony Jordan but kudos to whoever it was. Fantastic stuff.

It is still one of the best set of episodes in EE history, I think that is a lot to do with the fact the Slaters was his creation...Kat I heard was modeled on his wife.

Thanks for that. It is a shame that EE lost all these superb writers over the last decade and didn't replace them with competent writers. While also investing all their eggs in one basket with Simon Ashdown. That most likely played a major factor in the decline in quality over the last few years

Lucky guy! I think! Yes that whole set of episodes just blew you away. Amazing.

I don't quite know what happened. I suppose like the actors the best writers will want to spread their wings and try other things. I've seen people praise Ash down on here but for me something went badly wrong in 2010:2013 and the writers seemed to forget their existing characters and write better for the new creations who weren't really that interesting.

Simon Ashdown can't really be blamed. He is also one of the best writers EE have ever had and wrote some of their best episodes ever. Ethel's death was his finest moment.

What happened in 2010 is mainly down to Kirkwood. He got rid of many long term writers and brought in people who he had used on Hollyoaks. Lorraine Newman and DTC have managed to sort this and thankfully only Katie Douglas remains from the Kirkwood era.

Fair play, Ethel's final episode was excellent. Your explanation makes a lot of sense Mr Style!

A future executive producer I think. I believe she'd bring the show back to its "kitchen-sink drama" roots. The 2005 eps with Stacey/Jean/Frank/Pat/Chrissie remains one of my favourite EastEnders weeks.

I agree Simon Ashdown is a fine writer but I think the problem that with him was he only wrote the coveted episodes and normally always Branning central.

I think DTC brought in a mixture of new and old writers back and for the most it's served the show well and seems the writing team are getting a more equal share of writing credits/episodes even the bigger ones more coveted one.

She still has a great passion for the show and watches it/tweets about it. DTC would have her back in a New York minute (who wouldn't? ) but she's very busy with other projects.

With Crimson Field axed, maybe her return will be sooner rather than later. It'd be great if she wrote a few episodes around the 30th anniversary.

Which is how it should be, Simon got too big for his own boots. What is he doing these days anyway?
