It is clear to me that there are different rules for different posters. Some people get banned for next to nothing and some posters seem to be able to derail threads and chat and flirt with no problem whatsoever. Whether you agree with those actions being offences which deserve bans is not the issue. The issue is that they are against the t and c of the forum but bans are invoked on an inconsistent basis.
I think there is room for both serious debate and a bit of fun too. Soaps are supposed to be for entertainment, there has to be dark and light moments to it. The forum should reflect that in my opinion. The soap forum should not be a serious place at all.

So all the more reason to have a Chatter sub-forum. Maybe those funny chatty ones wouldn't have left/been banned if they'd had some legitimate place to just chat randomly with their DS friends. Wouldn't that keep everyone happy? (Particularly since, if we're honest, the chatty ones are in a minority. The majority, funny and otherwise, do tend to want to comment on the myriad various aspects of their favourite soaps, which is fine as this is after all a Soap forum).
Fair point, it is a question of balance and trying to keep everyone happy. By and large from what I've seen on the forum I think it succeeds in doing this. I do agree with you on the removal of threads for tenuous reasons.

It's just symptomatic of the decline of soaps in general. They attract less viewers; consequence fewer viewers to fill online forums.

In another decade this place will be a ghost town.
I don't think it is.

So basically you propose Rotter to take any fun out of the forums, general natter or otherwise, I'm sorry but it just doesn't work like that, you want the place to become completely dictatorial?

Having debates and discussions is great when you get members who want to but I see little of that now days it's slowed right down some of threads on here use to go for page now we're lucky if it gets past second page.

Members being social is part of the forum and having a rapport with them is why it works, it's why so many absent members are missed because you come to know them.

I also find that the percentage of issues seems to be stemming from the Eastenders threads or EE fans who seem to get the raw end of the stick from other members who take issue with them.

Over the years some of the more die hard debaters have left for one reason or another, usually after being banned.

When you get a forum like this, people will come for different reasons. Some want to have fun, some want to debate and others just want a good moan.

I think it's fine if people want to take a character, a particular soap or viewing figures seriously, just as it's fine to have a bit of friendly banter. Respect from both sides would improve the forum no end.

I agree that we've lost some great posters... catsmeow, PP, BA and of course dan 2008 Let's just hope that they return sometime soon, meanwhile we seem to have a few newbies which is always good for a forum.

Cats meow and her homophobic comments had no place on the board. PrincessPerfect posts occasionally. Who is BA?

As I said, the debating and banter should go hand in hand however there should always be an entertainment of fun. You can have a laugh and a joke even when you are dabating something, makes the posts a bit more colourful.

it all when down hill when they axed Mona....
So many posters loved her more than Philth loves Shirley.

They would also dig for Mona.

Catsmeow was an interesting and often fun poster. Of course her beliefs made some of her posts controversial but that only went to encourage debate. I don't think we should be afraid to confront prejudice....it's out there whether we like it or not. If I'd only ever responded to people I agreed with I wouldn't have lasted long on the forums.

BA= Blue Angel.

If people want to have fun and it's soap related I don't think there's ever been a problem. I do draw the line at posters being poked fun at, but then that's just me. If people don't mind then it's none of my business.

I totally agree Vald. At least if she was saying anything homophobic people had a chance to have their say back but as you point out a lot of it was her religious beliefs but I had quite a few nice conversations with her where she explained some aspects of her faith to me which I was a bit unclear about.

It's a shame that so many (main EE IMO) forum members have left or are on a break (or been banned ). I wonder if they realise they're missed?

Afraid I don't miss those Phirley debates that went around in circles. I think I feel a migraine coming on...

Cats started a load of fun threads in her last few months like the what's in a name, post a pic of yourself and the DS Awards. She seemed to disappear at the same time as Chyred. She did say she wanted a load of kids. She's out there somewhere with quadruplets.

I'd forgotten the soap survey threads. There were some good battles on there.

Ah that's a nice thought...four kittens

Especially Poll Rigging-gate!

Haven't seen you for ages Cit....did you give up on EE for good. At least your survey threads used to get all the various soap fans in one place just for one day.

Hey, Val! Oh you can always find me mooching around Emmerdale and Corrie threads. I did give up on EE for good. Tried to get back into it for a few months when DTC took charge but the spark has just gone for me.

I kind of miss the Soaps Survey thread, you're right it was quite nice to have everyone in one place! But alas, not sure the audience is really there for an SS return.
