Any long running show that suffers in the ratings because of quality in the way that EastEnders has over the last couple of years is never going to truly recover to it's previous performance.
All that really matters to me is... I enjoy it.
The show's in a really good place at the moment, and frankly, if you try and explain ANYTHING about a soap - or really any other fictional show - to a casual viewer, you're going to find them rolling their eyes. That's the nature of fiction, a lot of it hangs on coincidence, and in a serial, there's more coincidence than most. People seem to forget that.
Imagine trying to explain Stacey to someone who hasn't seen EE in the last 10 years.
-Who's that?
-That's Stacey Slater.
-Slater? I remember them. She's not a Slater.
-No, she's a cousin. sort of. Somewhere on Charlie's side.
-Where did she come from?
-Dont know, just turned up one day after her mother had been sectioned.
-Sectioned?
-She's got bipolar.
-Oh. Why is she in prison?
-She killed Archie Mitchell.
-ARCHIE Mitchell?
-Phil's dad's brother. He married Peggy.
-So Peggy Mitchell married her husband's brother? She used to have such a go at Sharon.
-I know, right?
-Why'd she kill him?
-He raped her.
-So it was self defence?
-No, he was on the floor of the pub picking up a snow globe. It was a couple of months after her raped her.
-So, why'd she kill him?
-Pent up anger, I guess.
-How is she going to get out of prison?
-They're going to blame it on her bipolar.
-I thought that was her mum?
-It is. They've both got it.
-Oh.
