Best gadget for streaming catch-up TV over the internet?
Most of the apps on my Samsung Smart Blu-ray player no longer work.
Can anyone tell me which would be the best cheap device to get the basic UK channels -BBC iPlayer, ITV player, 4OD & Demand Five - streaming over the internet to my TV. I'm not really interested in anything else. Thanks in advance for any advice. |

I got a free Youview box from BT when I signed up for a 12 month contract on my broadband. It is a PVR and does all the catch-up stuff.

Definitely the cheapest option. Plus its not very often you find something that has BBC, ITV, channel 4 and channel 5. |

The Roku box (which the NowTv is a hobbled version of) also IMO is the most reliable device of its type on the market -- something that counts for a lot with these things. Good, strong WiFi connection, fast response and not inclined to crash every 20 minutes.
Which is more than can be said for the YouView system, sadly. I loved the idea, but in practice it's a mess of black screens, slow response and random errors on iPlayer. But maybe that's just my particular receiver. Your other choice is an Android TV box -- this is basically just a tablet without a screen, and allows you do do everything you could on a tablet. The newer quad-core versions are fast and reliable. |
