If Ste is his boyfriend, why shouldn't he call him sweetheart?

It just sounds a little odd. I'm a gay man myself, but I don't think I would ever call another guy a sweetheart, nor would I want to be. Some terms of endearment sound better coming out of a woman's mouth!

I agree that more women use the terms sweetheart, honey etc than men. It's unusual but not unheard of.

I'm just watching the omnibus now and he's said it three times so far. Each time I thought it was weird and i'm also a gay man myself

Also Hannah, and I'm sure there are other instances.

I don't particularly like it, but it's just something that he does (or maybe it's something James Sutton does.... I happened to see an Emmerdale video, and his character Ryan called Maisie sweetheart, in a casual way LOL), so I'm not too bothered by it.

I think a couple of people have mentioned before that JP has always said that, but I don't remember it, which surprises me because I have found it very jarring whenever he has said it to Ste. It just doesn't sound like 'natural' language between those two. A bit like when Ste said to JP a while ago, 'Why are you being so cryptic?' That just would not be what Ste would naturally say. He would more likely have said 'Why are you being so weird?' Sometimes HO are really bad at natural-sounding dialogue.

Sweetheart has always sounded a little patronising to me regardless of who says it and to who. I imagine someone's sweetheart would be someone's long term companion whereas jp and ste have only been a couple for three weeks. Ste doesn't look like a sweetheart to me - he's kind of feral and spikey-looking. Nana is cuddly and Barbara Cartland-like and much more like a sweetheart.

I think it was odd sounding, especially seeing as he was banging Ste's Dad a few months ago.

JP's not a mincing, over the top gaydo like Sean Tully or Graham Norton so it's a bit strange hearing him say it.

I think it is the frequency of it which is jarring. The first time I noticed him saying it on Tuesday straight after Danny had died I thought it was cute, touching and appropriate in the circumstances but the next day when he called him nothing but (including shouting it out across the street I think) and never using his actual name it seemed odd!

I've known plenty of men (straight and gay) that use the term as an endearment but that is what it is, to be used sparingly as an endearment to denote affection and closEness - not all the time! The one man that used a term of endearment to me all the time (darling) I just began to think he didn't actually know my name and I was just one of many women he was seeing!!!!

I do also agree with whoever said that it's partly that it just doesn't seem to fit Ste's character to be Addressed in that way. I quite often use terms like darling, sweetheart, honey to friends as well as lovers but seem people don't like it (in the same way some don't like having their names shortened) so I hold off with them and often you don't need to be told - it's just a 'sense' of them. So, Hannah seemed like the type of person that would appreciate her boyfriend calling her sweetheart - Ste doesn't really.

I agree... but since we have established that JP frequently uses the term, it's more of a writing fail with the character of Ste (who, if in character, should just tell JP "who the hell are you calling sweetheart?? I'm not your sister!!") rather than JP!!

Anyway, I wish the writers/James/whoever is responsible would drop it!!

Yes, that's what I was trying to say. It kind of needs to come from the right person to the right person in terms of personality. I know that although I use it to friends, if someone I didn't know well (especially perhaps an older man when I was younger) I would bristle and find it very patronizing. That said, I did have an older male colleague that used to call me sweetheart when I was about 30 but it was fine, it actually made me feel special but that was because he was such a lovely, kind man - it was like having your favourite Uncle around!!!

But generally, it kind of has to be earned if that makes sense and i'm not sure we've seen enough of JP and Ste for that to be the case. Though he was saying he loved him this week so....

JP would have never dreamt of calling Craig sweetheart (he would have been punched in return, I reckon), and they had a much deeper bond.... so why are they making him call Ste that???

The only other romantic partner he called sweetheart was Kieron... but I can see him and Kieron having the kind of (cringeworthy) relationship were they call each other sweetheart and other endearing nicknames. But that's it, he never called any of his other romantic partners sweetheart, only friends/family.

So why this insistence with calling Ste sweetheart, when their relationship is very new??

Probably because they want us to believe that they are so much in love without making the effort of showing us...

I'm really interested in that comment? Would you care to elaborate as to which points you think are questionable? I just say that as I was concerned some people might think there was a problem because it was a man addressing another man but I don't really think anybody has intimated that here - if they had i'd be on them in a flash.

ETA' there was one comment I thought was borderline but that was more about 'types' of gay men than saying that men shouldn't use affectionate names towards each other.

In all honesty I don't think they (ie the writers) are doing it. As others have mentioned JP doing it with Nana, Hannah, Kieron and I seem to remember Carmel and also Ryan with Maisie in Emmerdale, I suspect that it is James Sutton doing it unscripted (and possibly subconsciously). They have such a quick production turn around they aren't going to do a retake just because of that.
