Has Edith improved since she came in?

You also saw the feel the emotion point - as she sang it in the stronger version she burst out crying.....”

I've cried when singing a song. Surely it's not unusual to feel emotion when singing?

You'd seemed to be arguing that Edith had an impressive ability just because she was able to interpret songs on her own. Edith was the only one you had seen "just do it."

And that's the contrast you've drawn with Kim. Edith develops her own interpretations; Kim craves guidance from the instructors.

I just don't think it is an impressive ability unless the interpretations are - unless they're original or offer new insight or reveal unexpected aspects or depth - and so far Edith's haven't been. So far, she's done another thing you've praised: "Edith knows so much music that she knows the style these songs ought to be sung in."

I also think Edith's often picked songs that are easier to "get". "Shout", for instance, and I suspect she's more familiar with the songs she's picked than Kim is with the one's she's chosen.

However, that leaves us with the question of why some people are reluctant to interpret on their own. It may be that they lack confindence, or enough experience, or that the words and music of their chosen songs are emotionally ambiguous or unclear. Or they may not have done it enough to have developed their ability.

Still, Kim's the only one who's made me cry. She must be doing something right, and even if what she's drawing on is her ability as an actor, that's fine with me. When I saw David working with Kim on the BBC 1 show, that seemed to be what was happening. He was giving her a story, and she was working from that.

If a star of the most miserable soap ever on TV can't make her audience cry their ratings would be in real trouble.

And why do you think they showed that? And not the bit after when they read the story together word by word?

I've only watched one evening before tonight and that night Kim was actually not very good at all. That evening my husband and I (who both sing on stage regularly and have some musical training) thought Edith was better. Sorry I can't remember offhand which performance it was.
Kim sang much better than that tonight. I don't know if she was better than Edith though, because I couldn't hear Edith!

Yes she has. Shame you could hardly hear it . You should believe the judges, who all thought it was better than last time she sang it, because it was this morning when we could hear it. Since the invisible WMD in Iraq though I expect people won't agree with the experts so we may never know - unless she wins and sings it with the sound up.

I love it! We've finally got to the point were somebody compares FA with the war in Iraq! I love you guys, you crack me up!

What does that have to do with it? I haven't watched the show in years, and it was her voice that affected me, not what she does in Eastenders.

Is there some other way to read stories?

Edith probably does it a page at a time.

If you couldn't turn on tears you would never get casted for Eastenders,

Edith doesn't turn to David and say how should I sing that word, does that work, should I sound sadder - she doesn't need that much direction.

She gets the Eastenders audience to cry by singing? I can't make sense of what you're trying to say. Is her acting ability supposed to make her ability to convey emotions when singing seem of less consequence?

Yes, I know that's what you meant.

And I'm still waiting for a great interpretation to come out of Edith.

Anyway,

Her "Bridge" should be better than last time in any case, because then she had that sort throat and cough. It doesn't show she's improved her singing ability.

In any case, I still don't like her interpretation of that song, especially in the part just before the end, and it didn't sound like that had changed much at all (though Orangeman's remark made it seem like it might have been a bit more to my liking).

Her version of the Oasis song wasn't anything she couldn't have done earlier.

Yes, alcohol does have that effect! As for the rest, I recall a video, but not what she was singing. But the purpose of my post wasn't to dispute it, I was just being anal about the facts - I can't help it, it's the pedant in me!
