It's really annoying me that this American bird fronting the adverts keeps saying that 1984 by George Orwell was written in 1949. IT WASN'T.

It was written in 1948 and was PUBLISHED in 1949.

The title came about because George reversed the last two digits of the year he wrote it in. 1948 became 1984.

They can't even get the origin of the name of their show correct!

This is quite a shocking revelation.

Shouldn't someone call Ofcom or something?

Did anyone really think it was written it 1984?

I know that there is a possibility that a high number of viewers may have not read it, but surely most people know something about it? Or am I horribly wrong about the general level of education people have.?

Edit - sorry that sounded really stuck up.. Not criticising people., just education..

People confuse written & publishing of literary works. It was published in 1949 though

Imagine you are at who wants to be a Millionaire and the final question for the million pounds is when was 1984 by George Orwell was written, you remember hearing if from the American "bird" that it was 1949 and that's what you give as your answer, would you be happy they taught you the wrong thing?

We all know that. I know it because my father bought a copy for me to read.

I've finally seen a SuperCass ad after hearing so much about them. Omg, how annoying. I don't know what third rate bingo parlor they found her in but gee whiz, what a pain in the a**. I'm sorry you all have to endure those nauseating commercials.

Here's an annoying one that I have to endure all the time. I can't reach for the remote fast enough when it comes on. Jim Adler On Top Of Big Truck: http://youtu.be/5TvdiBebWTY

I haven't read any of the Bond books - what nationality was James Bond?

The question would more likely be "when was 1984 published?" The reason is that some books take more than a year to write so the definitive date is the date of publication.

Gosh, you're so right. Rather than saying "written in 1949" they should have said "published for the first time in 1949, but many times thereafter, and written in the years preceding 1949, being finished in 1948."

Would that be accurate enough for you? I'm sure they'd be happy to allow that extra minute or so to get all that in, in order to not irritate you.

OMG how inaccurate. It's been published many times since 1949. Perhaps you'd be happier with the more accurate "it was copyrighted in 1949" even though that will likely be inaccurate when the copyright is eventually renewed someday.
