Since yesterday tethering has been very unreliable. The internet works for about a couple of minutes then doesn't work for ages.

In the past when ive had a problem with tethering, usually just turning off internet sharing then turning it back on resolves the problem, but this time doing that makes no difference.

This isn't specific just to one computer. I've tried it on two laptops and the same problem occurs with both.

Strangely though, the internet functions ok on the phone itself. It's just tethering is the problem.

What could be the problem?

That's weird, I'm not having these issues.

What mobile are you using?

Do you have anything that could be interfering with the wifi channel, have you tried changing to a different channel? What about when it'd plugged in over USB?

Im using a Nokia Lumina 520 so i can only connect via WiFi but not usb.

I haven't tried changing to a different channel. How do i go about doing that?

Does sound more likely a Wi-Fi problem. I switched from a 2.4GHz only MiFi to one that can do 5GHz and saw a massive improvement. Even in London, it's possible to do a scan and find zero 5GHz access points.

Sadly on most Android devices you can't change the channel (usually 6) unless you root, and it seems the same applies for Windows Phone. Just checking on my Lumia 930 and the only setup options are broadcast name (SSID) and password. No option to use 5GHz or change channel.

Not sure if there any third party apps that offer more (well, any) customisation?

The internet wasn't working via tethering before midnight, then at midnight suddenly it started working and going fast.

Does this suggest that this is due to Trafficsense? Im not downloading via p2p so I don't know why Trafficsense would be the reason.

Could be that then, or just general congestion, but even if that IS the case, using a phone as a wireless hotspot for tethering can still be a right PITA on devices that use a fixed channel, used by others around you.

I'd still be trying to find a way around that, or even using USB tethering if you can (but I don't think that's an option on WP either) which is going to be a lot more reliable in the long run.

Does your plan definitely allow tethering and you're not even using bittorrent sync or anything that could cause it? There might just be a lot of people tethering in your area as tethering is kept ring fenced from the main data pool.

Im on the one plan so my plan defiantly allows tethering. Im not using anything like bittorrent sync.

I tried tethering just now at 12:30pm. Unfortunately the same thing is happening, tethering isn't functioning although the internet is working ok on my phone.

No can do. I only have one smartphone.

Tethering started working again at 12:40pm. Websites were loading fast then at 12:50pm it started running painfully slow with websites not loading at all. At the moment, tethering is working OK and websites are loading fast.

Usually tethering is very reliable, so I don't know the cause of this.
