He can't cope with the fact that Chris who he thought (and obviously still does think) was a lesser person than him, had the temerity (as Steve would see it) to nominate him.

She didn't stand by them. Once she realised she couldn't dismiss them as being false she claimed they were said 'jokingly'.
Also, one of them was said only the day before, so if she'd truly forgotten saying it, then she really has the shortest memory known to man.
