Ported Numbers
I have used the search function (honest!) and googled but I am still unclear about ported numbers. AIUI, originally, the original network was involved (because calls to the ported number used the range allocated to the individual networks) and then routed to the new network i.e. two networks were involved and if either went down then the call failed. Also AIUI, OFCOM proposed that a central database of ported networks should be created so that only the new network was involved. From what I've read, I think that this was supposed to be implemented in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 (depending on who you believe) or alternalively that the proposal was canned and the original set-up (i.e. both networks involved) remains in place!
Does anyone know the current state of play. (I am about to move a ported number to one of two viable alternative networks. One of these is the original network that I ported from years ago. I guess that all other thing being equal, it would be best to revert to that one. Views?) |

All I can find is this
http://stakeholders.ofcom.org.uk/con...ing/statement/ from 2010. Which basically says calls to ported numbers are routed initially to the original network then forwarded on to the new network. So basically no direct routing. Can't find anything yet to suggest that situation has changed. |

Is this why when I call my brother's Three phone I occasionally get an Orange (it's a woman's voice) voice saying the person is unavailable?

chrisjr Thanks. Looks like I'll port back to the original network (better than current one and one less thing to go wrong).
