The startup OnePlus recently launched its first smartphone, the One, and to deal with production issues it's been letting people buy them by invitation-only, slowly offering them to more people as more are produced. It's a weird system, but today OnePlus is supplementing it with a horribly conceived and deeply sexist contest that allows women to jump the line if they're willing to have a bunch of internet dudes vote on their appearance. The contest asks women to draw the OnePlus logo on their body (or on a sheet of paper that they're holding) and then take a photo of themselves and post it in OnePlus' forums. From there, the 50 "most well liked" will get a free T-shirt and have the option of buying the phone.
This really pisses me off, I am far from a feminist but seriously WTF is going on with the company? I swear they are continually doing stupid things to piss away any good publicity they have had. The stupid invite system, faulty screens to this particular contest.

This is why chinese companies like this won't ever make it in the west, you wouldn't catch Samsung, Apple and the big venders even remotely offering anything similar. I am at a loss as to what they are trying to achieve with this latest publicity campaign, its just one thing after another.

I seriously wish this pathetic sapp of a company either ramp up production to supply the handsets or shut the eff up and piss off back to the cave where they belong.

Thoughts?

My first thought. They must think it's still the 1970's.

What a bunch of idiots...

They're Chinese.

All respect for this company is now gone.

Everyone should be a feminist, male and female.

If you don't believe in the social, political and economical equality of the sexes then you're an awful person.

If you do, you don't know what 'feminism' means.

It actually gets worse!!

OnePlus are grabbing all rights to the photos entered, to do ANYTHING they see fit with.

By submitting a photograph in the Ladies First Contest (Contest), you hereby grant to Sponsor (and Sponsor's licensees and assigns) a perpetual, irrevocable, royalty-free, worldwide, nonexclusive license to publish, reproduce, display, perform, distribute, adapt, edit, modify, translate, create derivative works based upon, and otherwise use and sublicense your photograph, or any portion thereof (including without limitation any names, likenesses, or personas shown in the photograph), in connection with the Contest and for any other purpose (including without limitation for entertainment, instruction/education, advertising, marketing, promotional and/or publicity purposes), and to incorporate your photograph into other works in any manner, form, media or technology now known or later developed.

I have NEVER seen such reaching terms for a photo contest, they could superimpose the head onto someone else's body and turn it into a wallpaper or advert for the next piece of shxxte they release, and the person has no rights.

It is terrible but nit for the reasons posted here.

Why can't men have the same chance as women? Surely if we are all equal there should be a hot or not for men. This is typical of today's society where men are discriminated against all the time.

I would like to be spared spiel when it comes to feminism, I am well aware of its origins and meanings, the modern day variant that some use is a complete bastardisation of the original meaning of the term.

Funny I was having this very conversation with a friend of mine just moments ago..... Men are objectified the same way as women, only its more acceptable for women to do it....just because....

I'm glad they've pulled this tacky stunt, which has done nothing but damage their brand.

Mind you, I wonder what percentage of indigence from the respondents on their forum has been magnified due to the frustration of not getting their hands on a device...

Again, nasty contest. Shouldn't have happened.
