Wasabi Peas
Sitting here munching my way through a bag of them. They are by far my favourite snack at the moment.
Anyone else a fan? It seems people either love them or hate them.

They are a strange thing, nobody had ever heard of them until about 5 years ago, and then they were everywhere.

I had some in a Japanese restaurant (they bought them out in a bowl similar to how a Chinese does with prawn crackers) and they were lovely. I then bought a bag from a supermarket and they were digusting, the texture was just completely different. I'm not sure why they were so different but I wasn't impressed.

I like wasabi paste, its lovely mixed in with mayonnaise, or putting a little in mashed potato. It's like the Japanese version of our horse radish.
I like the peas, but I couldn't eat them all the time as I do with cashew nuts. |

Not a huge fan, but my OH eats them by the truck load. There’s a stall on my local market that sells nuts, dried fruit etc. by weight, and they do 100g of wasabi peas for something like 50p. He’s worse than a child walking past a sweet shop, I often plan our route around the market to specifically avoid the place, else he’d happily buy up a kilo of the things as an afternoon snack.

Being a chilli-head and lover of all things hot I can't believe i'd never come across these until just a couple of weeks ago when I was in a bit of a well-to-do hotel bar and the waitress brought a tray of "things to dry your mouth out so that you'll buy another pint for £7" to our table.
There were peanuts, vegetable crisps, and these round green things. Tried one. WOW! Still had no idea what they were so asked the next waiter that came by and I'm now on the lookout for a permanent supply! |

It's highly unlikely that these so-called wasabi-flavoured snacks contain any genuine wasabi at all. There have been a couple of TV programmes about it quite recently.

That's because it's part of the same family of plants and is actually known as Japanese horseradish in some places!

I was just trying to explain it to anyone that didn't realise what wasabi was ![]() Hope I didn't sound patronising ![]() First time I had it, was in Tokyo and that's the way they described it to me. My daughter lived there for a few years and translated ![]() They probably said yours mums a donkeys arse and came out horse radish ![]() Anyway love the stuff. Peas I think are hit and miss, we get ours from the Japan centre in London and it's always good. Last edited by tangledinblue : 14-08-2014 at 13:59. Reason: Different smiley |

I got some in my Graze box once. I kept them for a few weeks thinking they didn't look very nice. When I did get round to trying them I loved them! Must get some soon. I forgot about them until I saw this thread.
