For a long time I used --- still use --- my HTC Wildfore, as it has quite simply the best camera I've ever used on a phone, except maybe the SE K800i. Now it's damaged and I'm looking for a replacement. Any ideas? Note: I do NOT need a phone in the usual sense: I have a Galaxy S4 so this does not need to connect to anything, it would simply be used as a camera. However I would like to be able to use an intervalometer/app with it (something to allow me take a set number of photos at once without having to keep pressing the shutter.

This is the kind of thing I can get with the HTC, so it would need to be up to this standard or better...

Thanks for any suggestions.

This may be a stupid question but why not just use the Galaxy S4. You'll be able to use the same app you use on the HTC

Or why not just get a dedicated digital camera?

Surely the Lumia 1020 is the phone for you?

In order: the Galaxy S4 has an ok camera but it's nowhere near as good as the HTC Wildfire's; I do have a DSLR but it's pretty complicated and I'm no camera buff: I probably have settings set wrong but the pix are not coming out that great; Nokia Lumia 1020? Hmm. But that's Windows isn't it? I haven't used a Windows phone yet. Also, I've heard their cameras don't have flashes?

Thanks for taking the time to reply and suggest, everyone.

The Lumia 1020 has a Xenon flash.

If you are not using it as a phone why not just get a small compact camera - generally speaking even a cheap one will have better pictures than most phones.

Well if you rate the wildfires camera that highly then you are probably better off staying with it. To be fair the S4 had one of the best cameras (on a phone) from 2013 so if the wildfire is miles better you won't like any of the 2014 flagship cameras as they also won't be as good as your wildfire.

Some sample pictures from the S4.

Not as good as i would have expected those photos - a bit soft without sharp focus.

You need the read what the OP wants. Compare the OPs photo of the cat to the ones you posted. As they said there is need something that can replicate the quality of photos that the Wildfire can produce.

So can anyone recommend an app for the GS4 that makes it take out of focus, noisy photos that have muted colours? Maybe there is an Instagram filter for that already (probably called "Wildfire").

What a bizarre thread. The wildfire was very much a budget phone at launch, quite a few years ago. By definition, the camera will be way behind virtually all but the very worst phones available today. I second the notion of finding some software to make your pictures worse.

If you really want a good camera, it will depend on your budget but I doubt a Sony z2, lumia 930 / 1030 or an iPhone 5S would disappoint.

Iphone 5S, while not being new, is still one of the best if not THE best camera on a phone, video is amazing too. You really can't tell your watching footage shot by a phone when watching it back on a computer screen

Some of the Nokia Lumia phones have the best cameras on a phone.

It's not THE best camera on a phone at all. As alan has said, some of the nokias are far better.

Don't get me wrong, the 5S camera is rather good, but you can still tell a mile away its shot with a phone.

Now, this thread is surely a joke though isn't it? The wildfire camera was and still is absolutely crap!

hahahahahahahahahaha, really?

The best mobile phone camera by a fair margin is the Nokia 808. Everything else is kinda poor in comparison, including the Lumia 1020 (which to be honest is a bit pants as a camera).

I think this is the key here. The OP thinks his HTC Wildfire takes great photos. He things the S4 doesn't, but by his own admission he owns a DLSR and doesn't understand how to use it.

In my opinion (a person who does know how their DSLR works), neither the Wildfire nor the S4 photos in this thread are particularly stellar. They're camera phone pics. The majority of them are mediocre at best. If you want good photos, buy a dedicated camera. The quality of photos from phones with tiny apertures and mini sensors is never going to be as good as an actual camera. Even relatively cheap compact cameras will do a better job!
