So the other day I used my iphone as a satnav, I generally find it better than my dedicated TomTom sat nav as the screen on the iphone is much better than the TomTom. Anyway when I used it yesterday it was taking me down all the back roads and around the country side, I'd have prefered to use main roads/motorways, is there any way of changing your prefered road types? Can't see anything.

I know sometimes it comes up with 2/3 alternative routes but when I used it yesterday it only offered up the one route which happend to be all country back roads!

You can get TomTom app (about £40) and Waze app (free) on the App Store, so if Apple's SatNav feature is not to your likeing, try another.

I used to use the TomTom app all the time, but now use Waze for the free traffic news and information, its pretty cool.

Google Maps has good navigation, and it's free.

I have TomTom too and i much prefer the look of Google Maps and i find myself using the latter the most. I used Apples effort the other day, i dont like it at all.

while that app and service is free, it does use data so it may cost you in data fees.
tom tom however has all maps stored locally so would use no data (unless you have live traffic updates enabled).

Apple maps has improved so much since launch. I always use it now and have never had issues. The maps are so clear

Yeah but you do have to weigh out £30+ for TomTom, i paid more for it a few years ago. I'm sure i paid £45 for it.

I've been routed differently between the same two locations by apple maps more than once. I believe it takes account of traffic conditions and road closures before deciding which route is best.

I use "UKNAVFREE" on my iPhone - this looks exactly like TomTom in user interface, costs what its name suggests and again uses totally offline maps (but open source ones this time). It may not be perfect but it is pretty good!

driving in areas where you have limited data connection will be an issue though.

I've had TomTom on my iPhone for years and not had a problem with it. However I did try Apple maps recently. I have to say it isn't bad.

I pay for the extra TomTom traffic service, but having used Apple maps a few times it seems to work as efficiently (and interfaces with other iPhone functions a little easier)

Though, you are right when you say, unlike TomTom, that it doesn't offer a "chose main roads only option" merely different routes to chose at the start of your journey (which will usually include a main road option highlighted on the map.

Of course (and particularly if you live round my neck of the woods, there may not BE a main road option.
