Transferring Music From Old Ipod To New Ipod
JEFF62
15-08-2014
Just bought an Ipod Touch 5th generation to replace a 4th generation one. On the old Ipod I have around 3000 songs but only 1000 of them are on my I Tunes library on my computer. Now I know that if I plug in the new one and click sync entire music library then the 1000 songs on my I Tunes library will appear on the new Ipod. But how do i get the other 2000 songs on there? In other words can I transfer all the songs from one Ipod to another? Can I import the songs into my I tunes library from the old Ipod first. I have most of them stored on an external hard drive. Do I need to import them all back to I Tunes from there? Any help would be greatly appreciated as I do not want to risk losing any of my collection doing this.

You can do this but NOT in iTunes itself - which downloads from the PC to the iPod only.

There are lots of programs on the Web which will upload select content (music, photos etc.) from iPods, iPhones, iPads etc. to a PC - to download to a new device. Some of these are free while others are paid for.

I have no experience on which are good/best but I am sure others will be along shortly to advise!

Hi, I've got the same problem.
The guys at the Apple shop were no help.
Any ideas please?

Doesn't look like we are going to get much help on here! So I will let you know what I did in the end. I moved my entire music collection from my external hard drive to I Tunes library on my laptop. Then plugged in the new Ipod and chose to sync the entire collection. The downside of this is that I now have to keep all of my music on the laptop all the time. As I have a 1tb hard drive it is not really a problem for me. If I add new music all it needs is another sync and it adds them. I have bought a 32gb Ipod which should hold up to 7000 songs. But after syncing the 3200 I have nearly all the space has gone! So that is what I did but not really what I wanted to do. I wanted to not be tied to syncing with the I Tunes libaray. Of course if I change my pc that is another problem. But you can use home sharing then apparently.

There are several other ways of up/down loading to an iPod one is Monkey Media which I find works without a problem.

You have to do some work! It took me all of 30 seconds with Google to come up with about 20 possible solutions - most in paid-for software which may integrate automatically with the iTunes library.

I did find the following which seems to do all I, personally, would want - and for free

I think you mean Mediamonkey.
I use this and it is great for exactly what the OP requires, if you have a PC available.

Having just read its webpage Mediamonkey looks like overkill for what the OP wanted! Just to simply pull content off an iDevice the one I found looks to be sufficient!

Apple makes such a drama out of downloading media files from their devices. The best way to stop various programmes from snooping around is to provide an official functionality in iTunes. Checking if the computer is trusted for a given account would stop unwanted downloads.

Yes, I googled this as well, before I posted for help.
But all I got were numerous references to products from dubious looking web sites
I was hoping to get something from a safe source
But I'll try mediamonkey if that's what is recommended as a safe option.

Thanks, all.

Mediamonkey looked to do too far too much for my liking! For simply pulling content from iDevices there are simpler solutions - the one I discovered is working fine for me!
