It was either concerning the book in 2008 or the one published this month that June Williams nee Mottershead said that her mother was an unsung hero, and that is very true.

What a fantastic ending to the 1st series and hope there are many more to come.

Excellent acting from all the cast and I am going to miss this so much. Imo the best show BBC has done for a long while.

BBC reshow this during late afternoon during the Christmas period. It is such a shame that it is not pulling in the nos. it deserves.

I loved that. I absolutely loved that. I was getting so stressed in the middle it was ridiculous! I think I gasped out loud when the vicar tried to blackmail Lady Elizabeth (is that right - I've suddenly gone blank on her name). And the hearing was a brilliant way of bringing everyone together and testing all of them. Lovely scene with George and Mew in the van. So many great scenes.

It's not fair to pick out any of the cast, because they were all so spot on I don't think anyone could have been improved on - but I'm still going to say I think the two daughters were real finds, I hope we see a lot more of both of them, and I think the way Lee Ingleby got all the different shades and shifts in George was amazing. I hope there will be more.

Amazing series !...agree acting was top rate from Lee, Liz right through to the postal boy !...you could see they all enjoyed making it and the close bond they all seemed to have together which comes out in the series !

The final episode had some nail biting tension. Even though we know Chester Zoo exists so clever how it was will they, won’t they get permission to open the Zoo.

Great programme and fantastically enjoyable acting from everyone. Hope there will be more to come as there must be much more of this story to tell.

I loved this series and hope there will be more to come. The way it ended left it open for more I thought.

The only thing that amused me was the use of modern phases that wouldn't have been used in the 1930's. For instance the Grandmother, (I can't remember her name), said "Here you go" twice in the episode. I don't think people started saying that until the late 1980's or early 1990's. Also someone said "How can I help?" and I think that is a more modern phase, but I am not sure on that one.

Definitely left open for 2nd series. The little girl wrote in her diary about how it was just the beginning and how they had lots to do yet. Also there was a great twist at the end, which opened a whole kettle of worms.

Really enjoyed this programme.
Hope we won't have to wait too long for the next series.

I've watched it now and the way it ended almost 10 seconds after they got permission, does make it sound like another series will follow, once the zoo is actually open.

Absolutely impeccable from start to finish, one of the finest series I have ever watched, brilliantly scripted, amazing cast, filmed to perfection - just a joy from start to finish.

It's difficult to check a phrase like that but often they go back further than you might think and can be in use in one area but not elsewhere. I tried a newspaper search but it is more a colloquial expression rather than something written down in a newspaper. You used to be able to easily search Google Books by date but since Google 'improvements' it is difficult.

Loved this show, cannot fault it. There will be a second series i reckon.

Theres certainly plenty of life left in it yet. I understand that they had problems during the war so that's a good storyline for a start.

I just hope the BBC don't feel that the viewing figures were too low because that's their fault for putting on during the week when it should have been on a Sunday night at a reasonable time for family viewing.

If this thread is anything to go by, then it certainly was a hit.

There is certainly lots of potential for a second series.

Will they get Adam the bear back?
Will Uptown residents cool off now the Zoo is going to open?
What new issues will the Mottershead have now they can concentrate on the zoo?
Will getting the lion threaten the zoo?
Will we get to meet Katherine's Husband?
What will Frankie do now?
Will Mew keep her job?
The priest is still an unknown quantity too.

And yes I loved the show a lot. Whilst I enjoy action and horror stuff it was nice to enjoy a show of a different style. It was a sweet series and had some great acting performances.
