Re:.... 'BBC confirms no second series of Our Zoo'.

I believe that this an extremely bad mistake on the part of the BBC and I think they may regret this decision.

So disappointed to hear there will be no second series of BBC 'Our Zoo'. I loved it and felt it was such an uplifting and inspirational tale of a family who overcame all obstacles to open a zoo without bars.

I would have loved for the drama to have continued and to have discovered how they managed to build a zoo that today is regarded as one of the best in the World and does so much for conservation.

There are not enough dramas, which the whole family can enjoy together on television.
I do still wonder why 'Our Zoo' was originally shown at 9pm - too late for families.
This is really disappointing news. Also was a bit cruel of the BBC to hint at further episodes (like the bringing in a Lion scene) at the end of series 1.
Is there a way to get around this, maybe through a petition with enough names?

Just finished reading Our Zoo the book which was great especially the parts about Junes friendship with Mary the chimpanzee. It was sad in some chapters with her experience as a child in the war time and various zoo animal deaths over the years. I enjoyed it in the sense that it didn't hold back and was a very interesting read.

I'm still in shock that there will be no second series of Our Zoo. Incredibly disappointing - I loved it. It was such an amazing and inspirational story, showing that it is possible to triumph against all odds. I felt I was really getting to know the Mottershead family and I was really rooting for them as the struggled to set up Chester Zoo. I found myself both laughing and crying while watching it - it was great. It will be difficult to replace. So very sad

This would be a great shame, but the BBC are the getting a reputation for this type of decision - see Ripper Street, The Fades.

I would however like to see it confirmed by a BBC press release as opposed just an article in The Chester Chronicle quoting a BBC 'spokesman'.

I presume the Chester Chronicle have good contacts with Chester Zoo.

Typical BBC. Plenty of junk and they axe a good drama like this.

Shame this has happened, but not surprised. Really think the beeb shot this in the foot before it even started, both with the time and day it was on, and the time of year.

Myself I would have put it in the CTM slot after it had wrapped up, or put it in as a lead up to Christmas show.

Still incredibly shocked at the BBC's decision not to have a second series. It was a drama which was both original and inspired people to chase their dreams.

What an amazing zoo Chester has become. Today it is doing so much for conservation and to raise awareness of the plight of endangered animals in the wild. For example, through their charity 'Áct for Wildlife', I´m aware of the plight and been able to help the orangutans in Sumatra and in Borneo whose habitat has been destroyed by palm oil. Recently I read about an poor orangutan which was discovered on a palm oil plantation having been shot 40 times. I´m glad that Chester and other zoos like it exist to provide a refuge for animals whose habitats are under threat.

Someone in Cheshire should write to their local MP and try to get him to ask a question in Parliament about it. Apart from being a superb series, it must be doing a lot to boost income for Chester Zoo and so help those types of activities.

'Our Zoo' is a wonderful and uplifting story of an ordinary family who in the 30s achieved something amazing despite all the odds. It's great family entertainment and so much better than the many violent murder based dramas on TV now which seem to becoming more and more graphic and more worryingly probably are numbing its viewers to the violence. Also better that than many of the superficial reality TV programs and its stars.

Chester Zoo today does a fantastic job in raising awareness of the plight of animals in the wild and helps through its conservation work. Many animals like the great apes and tigers numbers in the wild have plummeted in recent decades, with alarming small populations left. Good zoos like Chester are needed for many of these animals as a refuge. For example, Sydney the camel has only 1000 wild Bactrian relatives left living in China and Mongolia, many of them on a nuclear testing ground as else where they’ve been shot as their habitat has been taken over to be farmed.

Really shocked the drama has been axed for the reasons given by the BBC as it was one of the MOST original dramas on TV and raises awareness of the important role Chester Zoo plays in conservation.

If ever there was a case of the right show with the right script, the right tone, and the right cast, but in the wrong timeslot, with an uninspiring title (how well would Downton Abbey have performed had it been called Our Country Estate) this was it.

I'm incredibly disappointed to hear the BBC are not recommissioning this.

Hopefully this could be an opportunity for one of Sky; ITV; Netflix; or Amazon to pick this up and make the BBC commissioners look as stupid as they appear to be. They spend a shed load of cash producing a second series on total rubbish like the flop Atlantis; and yet wont recommission this ....

I too am really puzzled by the commision for the second series of Atlantis. I can only think that it had a two series deal or sold well overseas or been cheaper than something like 'Our Zoo' or perhaps fills a remit target for a different audience slot.

I liked 'Our Zoo', it was well acted and looked good. However, for me it did lack a bit of an edge. Perhaps it's because we know in real life, that the zoo became a success, they certainly weren't going to change history, it felt anticlimactic somehow. There are only so many 'animal escapes', 'opposition from the locals' and 'will they find the money' plotlines that they could do without it becoming a bit predictable so the story kind of lost it's legs for me before the end.

That said, I agree that they somewhat stymied it from the beginning by giving it the 9pm midweek slot when many viewers would be expecting something more adult nature.

Cancelling shows is becoming the norm for BBC. The writers are in a difficult position as they don't know if they are writing a 6/8 part one off or if it will be recommissioned. How can they storyline properly and leave the viewer satisfied? I'm getting fed up investing in series and then the story not being finished.

BBC seem to be chasing ratings like commercial channels more and more. Well that will be a chase to the bottom. Licence fee should enable more diverse programmes on BBC.

What a bizarre decision.......

I mean I can only judge by that fact I enjoyed the series and nearly all on here were positive.

Which is a rare thing.

Just goes to show the BBC are heading down the same road as most other channels. Repeats or tacky rubbish that the masses like. Dumbing down really.

Shame

The commercialisation of the BBC seems to have passed many people by.

Almost every programme now is only commissioned if suitable for a commercial channel. Both content and running time. (It's so such programmes can be easily sold.)

If the BBC are making programmes suitable for commercial channels then they are making commercial programmes, completely at odds with what the BBC is supposed to be about.

It's a privatisation of the BBC by stealth and it's about to increase under Director General Tony Hall.

The drama 'Our Zoo' touched, inspired and warmed the hearts of many.

June´s book contains many more adventures the Mottershead family had creating the
UK´s No 1 zoo.

Chester Zoo today plays an important role in the conservation of wildlife and raises awareness of the plight of many animals now facing extinction around the world as they suffer habitat loss and being over hunted.

It hasn't passed me by. And it's one reason I watch almost nothing on BBC1 (full of downmarket trash for the dull witted) and only a handful on things on BBC2 (a shadow of its former self). BBC4 is generally a joy but a poor relation which is starved of cash.

It's breathtakingly stupid that Our Zoo hasn't received a recommission. This is the sort of drama that the BBC used to consider its USP, its calling card, its reason for being. It was well written, well acted and well produced. All in all, it was one of the most enjoyable and charming dramas of recent years.

I feel sad for those involved in making this drama. They were poorly served by witless execs.
