Loved it!...
Didn't watch "live" and only caught up last night so knew the ratings weren't that great. That is a shame really. Its a good all round show, and the cast are first rate. Did want to boo the mum (nicely played by Anne Reid) when she was telling her poor old son to buck his ideas up...... Will try to catch it live next week.... |

Thought the elder girl was Lily Cole...model face.
But if the lad had turned up, what would they have done when they got off the boat, with no money? |

Absolutely Excellent
I am really looking forward to the all the future episodes.
The acting, the settings, locations and the filming were a treat. It is very rare to read on DS so many favourable comments. |

The older daughter is being played as a stroppy teenager but in a more gentile way as befits a time before teenagers were invented. But yes, the young June is a real talent, the scene early on where she uses just a facial expression to persuade her dad to save the camel was a beaut.

I think everyone in the cast was excellent. I hope the vicar isn't going to be an out and out villain and I'm very intrigued by the lady of the manor character - are these all based on real people? I thought they did George's shell shock particularly well, which can be a bit of a cliche in a drama but felt totally real to me, and his feeling for the animals. Lee Ingleby is a terrific actor. |

Compared to other dramas at the moment, which are all low, I'd say the ratings are fine. It happens to be next to one of the very highest rating programmes of the year - Bake Off - but if you compare it to other dramas it did better than most. I hope that the good reaction means those viewers will stick with it.

Loved the show, I'm from Chester so grew up in the Zoo (literally as we lived across the road!) so it was really lovely to see my hometown so nicely portrayed. This an interesting local article from June Mottershead, there are some big spoilers about how the story goes but very interesting all the same:

The house is in Chester Zoo - Oakfield Manor they use it as a wedding and conference venue now.
Loved the first episode, Chester Zoo is brilliant. The hall is surprisingly close to the Manchester ring road motorway but tucked away inside a lot of grounds. Stockport council have used it as offices in the past and I think it is still rented out that way. It has quite a history - Agatha Christie actually spent some time there during the real time period when Our Zoo is set and wrote some of her famous stories there. She was related to the then owners, I believe. More recently (according to a Fortean Times issue a couple of months ago) it was where there were alleged sightings of weird creatures known as 'phantom ninja dwarves' by a group of martial arts students practising in the grounds by the waterfall. So look out for them in case they show up in the background with the other zoo animals. ![]() Our Zoo was fantastic and deserved far more than 5.1 million viewers (OK figure as that is these days). But like most people on here I do not understand what idiot thought this series - so clearly accessible to a young family audience - was scheduled for 9 pm on a school weekday when it would have been out of bounds to many who could have enjoyed it. Hopefully word of mouth and the near 100% approval rate will see it grow. |

I enjoyed this, I'm a member of Chester Zoo so it's cool to see the origins of the place and how it came to be.
Can't wait to see the other animals come into the village. |

Just watched this and noticed a couple of historical inaccuracies.
In the 1930s Kenya was pronounced as 'Keen-ya' not 'Ken-ya' Also the term 'cash flow' did not come into usage until around 1950. Other than that it was very enjoyable but, I think, more suited for Sunday evening scheduling |

The character had lived or at least spent time in Kenya so they could have used the version that was used there at that time.
"The name was long pronounced by colonial-heritage Europeans as /ˈkiːnjə/. The European pronunciation has been abandoned in modern times, in favor of the African version" |

Only the second episode and they all such well defined characters it's a joy to watch but what's with the vicar? Can't work him out at all.
