I got the cane once for taking a short cut on a cross country run (not a competition), If I see the teacher now I will cane him.
If adults want to use violence on children then they need to be prepared for those children to become violent adults.

I had the cane and slipper and have never been in trouble with the police or anything. Schools had problems still but nothing like they do now with NO discipline. I think some people could have done with more canes and slippers though

a bare bottom spank in front of the fellow pupils will scare children into studying hard and becoming well educated, well informed individuals.

Far better ways to torture the kids then physical violence. Having been at school more recently left some 8 years ago. I remember the evil things teachers could do. Like taking your chair away and making you stand for a week. Making you sit under the blackboard, to do your work, whilst they write on it and cover you with chalk dust. Making you stand outside in freezing winter without your coat. Throwing a piece of chalk with the accuracy of a cruise missile, they come in sharp, sting for ages and can bruise in right places. Plus you have to then find it and take it back to them.

However the best form of punishment I ever witnessed came from one teacher who had clearly mastered the art of Verbal Bollocking. He would litterally shout at you one minute then be all sweet and nice the next then suddenly go back to this shouting monster. He'd also be a really mind game specialist and ask you questions designed to trip you up if you weren't on your game which would lead to a severe bollocking, or ask you question or to do something that again was a no win situation for you. He had people faint on him after a 'Endurance' bollocking as he called it. One lad got verbally torn to shreds for two hours straight before he finally lost the use of his legs, fainted and split his head open on the edge of his desk. Like a true professional he suspended the bollocking so the kid could be taken to the medical room and treated, then he when he returned he picked up from where he'd left off.

More likely to turn them into whacked-out nut jobs who, themselves with to exercise violence on the next generation of children

To be honest I left school in 1982 or there abouts.

It was a Catholic convent school & to my recollection we didn't have a cane or a slipper we had worse.

We had Sr Mary Agnes & Miss Winthrop & others, all dear to me mow, all below 4 ft 6 & all as scarey as hell its self.

The taller the teacher the less scarey they were.

They didn't need a slipper or a cane & it wasn't really fear they ruled by, it was respect. & they got that respect by respecting us as hormonal spirited girls .

How they did this is soo old fashioned but they gave us so much freedom. EG as long as we wore our kilt it could be long, or short, our tops as long as they were white / Blue schoolish were OK. i never appreciated how much those Nuns understood teenage girls at the time LOL.

But come to Jewellary

So many on friends reunited tell of how the sound of Sr Virginia's keys & her pawn shop determined the attire of the day,
fond memories

Mr Cane or Mr Slipper would be as ineffective today as they have always been, the problem lies with parents and societies declining values.

At school I was once caned across the knuckles with a ruler. I hate the teacher still. I was told by my mother a few years ago that this teacher was caught 'red handed' holding a girl off the floor by the scruff of her neck (after school hours, the girl was waiting for her mother to pick her up). The mother had just walked past the classroom window and saw.

Yes, you have to wonder about the motivation of some teachers who use corporal punishment. I'm sure some get a thrill out of it.
By the way when I got the cane, some of the other lads who were caught with me, put books down their trousers and got a way with it. I was too scared to try it.

i dont really think it did me any harm, apart from being an obstinate argumentative so and so,( as most on ds know ).I dont believe in smacking your children, as i can honestly say ,i never have, or ever will, i quite often had the cane at school, mainly for being disruptive, it was'nt really a cane but a 4 foot length of fibre glass rod, it was usually six of the best aswell, bloody hurt too

I remember one of our teachers threatened to shoot us in class .He was a part-time member of the army and lost the plot one day when the class wouldn`t keep quiet. He reached into his jacket and produced a personal issue handgun and pointed it at the class.Needless to say a word wasn`t muttered in anger after that incident because we were all bloody traumaticed
He got the sack shortly after as you would probably gather along with a spell in the big-house.

Having been in a school for about 4/5 years in another country which hit a child (ruler or cane) and then continuing schooling in the UK I could see a massive difference.

We were much better behaved because of the threat of being hit. It sort of put a bit of fear into you and made you think twice before doing something. It also taught you right from wrong. When I went to school in the UK, it was a completely different story and many kids wouldn't listen to instructions by a teacher or show any respect. It was quite a shock.

Now since they've also abolished hitting in the other country, things have started to worsen.

I must also point out I had one teacher who would hit me for no reason (i.e the person next to me was talking and she would hit me when I hadn't said a word!). She did this a number of times. I was quiet, shy boy who just did as told all the time. I did actually get into a state of this, my dad ended up having word with this teacher and then afterwards she acted more carefully.

This of course is where teachers/heads abused their powers and maybe its a vaild point many people use to not having the cane/smacking returned. How do you police the teachers/heads?

S'funny, I used to get rapped on the knuckles - really hard! - at school and I LOVED that teacher. She was a good teacher and was fair. She caned me for laziness and careless work...and she was right!

Another teacher caned me unjustly and gave me extra 'stripes' when I protested my innocence. I was eight years old.I hated him.

It never happened again, because when my dad found out he had ' a little word' with him. He told him what the state of play would be should it re-occur.

I got the ruler across the palm of my hand from a similar teacher. I still remember the pain. Not the pain of the ruler, but the pain of walking out to her desk under the gaze of the whole class and the pain of walking back again afterwards with her eyes boring into my back.

I loved her too. She was an enormously gifted and inspiring teacher. I and countless other little Brummie tykes from that area (described as a slum by the local newspaper, much to my parents' indignation) were set on a path to educational achievement, rewarding careers and escape from poverty by her approach. She was past retirement age when I was in her class, so she is probably long gone now, but her influence lives on. I am, and will always be, grateful to her.
