Tried searching for the old thread without any luck so we might as well start a new one - details of the new UTV Ireland channel was released today with UTV pulling off a major coup in Irish broadcasting - securing the services of Pat Kenny... Irish programming kicks off Jan 5th as Alison Comyn (formally of RTÉ, BBC, Sky News) anchors "Ireland Live". Along with existing news facilities in Belfast and Derry, they are "in the process" of securing news outputs in Cork, Galway and Limerick, to ensure the "best all-island coverage"

UTV Ireland today revealed that renowned broadcaster Pat Kenny will present a new peak-time series on Ireland’s newest TV channel, in early 2015. The station also unveiled a strong line-up of drama, entertainment and original Irish programming to show viewers just some of the shows they can expect from the channel next year.

John McCann, Group Chief Executive, UTV Media plc said: “We took the market by surprise last November when we announced our plans for UTV Ireland and I am delighted to do the same today as I reveal that one of Ireland’s most distinguished broadcasters, Pat Kenny, will be making his return to television in early 2015, on UTV Ireland.

"Pat is one of the most respected and experienced presenters in Ireland. His style of interviewing is unique, insightful and often challenging. These are all qualities that fit with the style of broadcasting that UTV Ireland aims to bring to the market and we are delighted that Pat will be part of the channel from the beginning."

Pat Kenny says: "I’m very excited to be joining the team at UTV Ireland and really looking forward to broadcasting on TV, early in 2015. Passion is very much at the centre of my rationale for teaming up with the team at UTV Ireland – the passion and energy which they’re demonstrating very much matches my own desire to get out there with something innovative, exciting and creative.

"It is early days in terms of the details of the output but I’m energised by the team at UTV Ireland and the prospect of working with talented young people, allied to some very experienced and wise colleagues.

"The plan is to be on air in the early part of 2015 and we’ve had a few good exchanges about how we can produce an entertaining, enticing proposition that is compelling for viewers. During the next few months we’ll take what is effectively a blank canvas with some initial strands and shape it to create the best television possible.

"For me, this is new territory – interesting, challenging and fresh. Another leap, so to speak. I also know the output will reflect the passion, talent, creativity and the energy of the team at UTV Ireland and I’m delighted to be part of that team."

Mary Curtis, Head of Channel, UTV Ireland, said: “From the outset there was one presenter in Ireland we wanted to work with to present a high profile series for the channel. Pat Kenny’s credentials are synonymous with quality and integrity and he is one of Ireland’s most popular interviewers. All the team at UTV Ireland are looking forward to working with him over the coming months to develop a fresh and exciting new series for Irish viewers."

UTV Ireland’s agreement with ITV Studios Global Entertainment gives the channel access, from the start of 2015, to programming made by ITV Studios for broadcast on the ITV main channel in the UK, which includes drama, entertainment, soaps, comedy and documentaries, as well as access to ITV Studios’ back catalogue of productions. UTV Ireland has also signed programme deals with All3 Media, DRG and HatTrick International.

Michael Wilson, Managing Director, UTV Television said: “So what is UTV Ireland about… well, we will have the best of entertainment, accessible and relevant news and current affairs and domestic programming that will reflect a modern Ireland. What we are revealing today are just a few of the highlights. It’s a clear commitment to our viewers to deliver a high quality television channel for Ireland.

"I believe UTV Ireland will have one of the strongest line-ups of programmes for a channel ever to launch in the Irish market. From the cobbles of Coronation Street, to comedy, drama and good old family entertainment, Irish viewers can look forward to seeing it all on UTV Ireland next year.

"We’ve got entertainment shows with Ant and Dec – I'm a Celebrity and Saturday Night Takeaway, high quality drama with Jeremy Piven in Mr Selfridge and classics like Prime Suspect and Cracker – as well as daytime shows, This Morning, Loose Women and The Chase. Graham Norton will be a very welcome face to UTV Ireland, bringing his unique brand of entertainment and humour and Jonathan Ross will also bring big name guests to the channel."

Mary Curtis, Head of Channel, UTV Ireland said: “News and current affairs programming is a major part of UTV Ireland and something that UTV has always excelled in. We are putting significant investment behind UTV Ireland’s news programming and we are delighted to be announcing an additional early evening news programme today.

"Ireland Live will be a 30-minute round-up of all the day’s news from both home and abroad with a specific sports focus on Fridays, looking ahead to all the weekend action. Ireland Live at 10 will be a 60-minute news and current affairs programme, which will also facilitate debate and expert reaction on topical issues. We will also commission and produce home-grown content which will complement this programming with a view to serving and entertaining our audiences further."

John McCann, Group Chief Executive, UTV Media plc said: "A huge amount of work has been going on behind the scenes – not only in Dublin but, all across the country. UTV Ireland will be a very strong platform for advertisers and our aim is to deliver a winning programme line-up for our audience."

Its basically a slightly better variation of UTV NI, especially when UTV NI looses Champions League rights ... I'm looking forward to seeing what they do with their news and current affairs output - having studios in Belfast and Derry, Cork, Galway and Limerick would make them up their with RTÉ.

I wonder will their be much all-Ireland programming live on UTVI and UTVNI - assuming Pat Kenny is being paid a considerable sum it will probably be the case that it will be across the two stations.

Just more garbage to clutter up the screens. UTV NI is awful so won't expect much from this. They seem to be making little or no effort with Irish programming. At least TV3 produce a lot of home based shows.

What is s.hite to one person might be compulsive viewing to another person. At least TV3 make an effort which is more than can be said for what UTV is going to do.

Well TV3's viewing figure back up my point, they have failed absolutely miserably to compete with RTÉ on any aspect of Irish broadcasting - without ITV programming TV3 would not exist... the end is probably close for TV3 now, they have an inability to evolve and basically have/had no understanding of what Irish viewers want..

A bit harsh I think. There's nothing like Midday, Xpose or Tonight With Vincent Brown in the RTE schedules and those programmes don't go missing for four months during the summer as happens at Montrose.....at the moment, the only nightly current affairs programme is on TV3, not RTE.

It seems reports of TV3's demise in the face of opposition from UTV Ireland have been greatly exaggerated. They've managed to retain the rights to The X Factor, Britain's Got Talent and Downton Abbey. The only major loss to their schedules will be Corrie and Emmerdale, but they can surely survive that.

Indeed they do. Anyone know if it's going to be fully Irish News or International News too? I'm wondering if the future might see UTV totally produce their own News programmes for Northern Ireland (as well as the Republic Of Ireland) instead of taking ITV's National News service (regulation permitting).

TV3, the 100% British venture capitalist owned firm who took a huge debt writeoff from the Irish taxpayer? Think they're pretty foreign at this stage.

There's no reason why they can't. The loss of Coronation Street and Emmerdale from their nightly schedule is hardly a devastating blow from which they can never recover : they're already launching their own Irish soap in January in fact.

UTV Ireland launches Jan 2015

Good. It'll provide some much needed competition for TV3 (and RTE for that matter) and the locally produced news content looks promising too.

There's no mention of Saorsat yet and l assume that with Sky, you'll at least need a Freesat from Sky viewing card if not an actual base level subscription. I very much doubt it will appear on BBC/ITV Freesat.

I don't think the Irish viewing public cares who owns any of them

UTVI have already said that they want to be on all platforms in Ireland, but no confirmation of deals or epg numbers have been announced yet. We are all hoping that they will launch in HD from day one, but we're afraid to hold our breath !

"The company is still in negotiations with platform providers Sky, UPC, Saorview and Eircom about their carriage of the new channel. Securing a spot high up the electronic programme guide (EPG) of each platform may be critical to UTV Ireland’s ambition to become the second most-watched channel in Ireland, behind RTÉ One."

UTV Ireland would also appear to be starting on Monday 5 January 2015.

They'd want to have a much stronger line up of programmes than they've listed so far in order to become Ireland's second most watched channel. At the moment, they look more like ITV4 or something.
