The spillover from Down goes as far as Dublin at least, covering quite a lot of people, plus anyone with SKY can get utv and it's on upc

Answered on utv.ie under FAQs: "We are unable to provide this service at present, but may do so in the future".

You cannot count satellite as spillover from the UK. UTV is already gone from UPC so you cannot count that either. There's a lot of country beyond Dublin.

Big day in the history of television broadcasting in Ireland - a second commercial broadcaster to shake up RTÉ is exactly what is needed.
Best of luck to them! |

Best of luck to them! However, it's a huge shakeup when it comes to TV3. It's likely TV3 won't be on air as we know it by this time next year (either a relaunch or a shutdown) Things will need a few months to settle down but the ratings picture should be fairly clear by the end of April. The introduction has already had a positive effect on TV3 by forcing them to commission their New Soap and New Irish programmes that are not TV3 studio based. However, it could be too little, too late. Good luck to all broadcasters on the Island in 2015. |

Isn't UTVI replacing UTV NI on UPC tomorrow?
I presume this means viewers in the Republic won't be able to watch any UTV programmes from now on? Not that they have much in the way of programming apart from local news and sport. |

As you say, I think they'll cope with missing UTV Live and the original Lesser Spotted Ulster.

What is UTV's source of revenue......just local advertisers? And if so, how are they able to afford to launch a new channel in the Republic?

I cannot find it. You won't be able to see it in NI unless you can pick up Saorview from over the border. |

So they're just reclaiming lost ground. There is plenty of profit to be made as the second station in the republic showing ITV programmes. Sadly that means that the future looks bleak for TV3. It's doubtful that UTV and TV3 in it's current form can both survive and UTV have the most important shows. Emmerdale and Coronation Street. The Street is probably still the most popular Soap in the Republic, it's just up to now the audience was scattered all over the place. (will still be the case just not as much) Plus UTV will be able to offer advertising packages with their Radio Stations and are also going to actively go after more Advertising money from London. Something TV3 either can't or won't do. |

Since at least the 80's UTV were getting some of their revenue from the republic and up to the time that TV3 got the ITV soaps it was the second most watched station in the republic after RTE1. (with only 60% of households getting the station) Over the last 10 or so years the share declined because of TV3 and no access to the Main SKY EPG in the republic.

Yes but then again it's hard to imagine that UTVI could put TV3 off air simply because they have Corrie and TV3 don't. One programme is hardly going to make or break either channel, and TV3's Irish content still looks much stronger......UTVI could end up getting large audiences for CS and Emmerdale, and miniscule ones for a lot of other ones (and don't forget TV3 still have BGT, X Factor and Downton Abbey).
Only 3 of TV3's top Twenty were home made 2 weeks ago. 2 shows were films and the other 15 were ITV shows. Make no mistake, without the ITV shows TV3 looks like the one that loses out. Also remember that Xfactor and Downton Abbey aren't on again until September. It's down to simple economics TV3 have to either start aiming for a different audience or they'll probably close. They actually have a chance if they go for non-ITV type viewers, there are plenty out there but looking at the first two weeks of the new year they have not learnt their lesson. |

You'd think that but when you look at the figures from the past Twelve Months None of TV3's regular Irish Shows had high audiences. Their biggest show with a half decent audience would be Tonight with Vincent Browne which does between 100-140 thousand a night. Most don't even break 100,000 (there are exceptions but they tended to be on right after the soaps.)

It would still strike me as slightly odd though that a terrestrial channel in existence for 16 years could be forced off air by a new channel simply rehashing a load of ITV content. It will be interesting to see how their new soap Red Rock fares anyway....looks like they're investing a hell of lot into it.
If they had used the ITV content they had correctly with news and Irish programmes at primetime they might not be were they are now. Their new soap might be welcome but it's still a soap, again the same audience that UTV is chasing. There's also little loyalty to the station (Unlike RTE1) No one I know with a Sat dish will watch Champions league on TV3, it's straight off to ITV. Obviously that changes next Autumn if TV3 is still around. However, it's almost as if you're forced to watch the station rather than a real choice. That's why they were so eager that UTV didn't get onto Saorview, It's very possible that much of their audience are in Saorview only homes (about 10%) overall. |

The one thing TV3 have done in their favour in the last 12 months is build up 3e's market share, between the Europa League, Family Guy and UFC, so they can buy themselves a few months by migrating content back to the parent channel, rather than spreading themselves too lightly.

The Station has huge amounts of Debt around it's Neck, The Irish Taxpayer has written off 100 million Euros and depending on how you look at it TV3 probably has lost 10 million a year every year over the last 16 years. A lot of this had to do with silly money being paid for the station but it still doesn't make very much money.

You reckon TV3 could be off air by next September? Are things that bad? It wouldn't be great for Irish viewers if that happened as it would mean they would be down two channels (inlcuding 3e) : UTVI are only showing the stuff that was already available on Ulster Television, with only minimal extra Irish content.
I could be wrong of course but just look at the ratings for the last 12 months. They have to turn into a totally different broadcasting beast overnight and that's very unlikely to happen. They had a new show lined up for 7 every night and can't go ahead with it because of lack of funds http://www.evoke.ie/showbiz/aisling-oloughlin-new-show/ They claim it's because the schedule is so packed! So every night at 7, Australian Daytime Filler (at best) Nothing to Declare is going out instead. That's followed by the truly terrible Lie. Meanwhile RTE and UTV Ireland are buillding their audience for the evening with their respective offerings. They were hoping that UTV would buy them out but that didn't happen. http://www.independent.ie/business/i...-29210693.html Their owners are hoping that someone (anyone) will come along and buy the operation but why would anyone do that now when you can just start up new and debt free. So yes if in say 8 or 9 months when it looks like there are going to be a lot of losses the plug could be pulled. |
