UTVI is a seperate entity. It is not part of the ITV franchise so will not carry ITN programmimg.

That sucks then. Sounds like viewers will be missing out on lots of programmes they wanted to see and have to watch a load of dross and fillers instead.

Has all of ITV's sports coverage been lost as well by the way eg. all the live football matches they show?

RTE2 is mainly a kids channel with some sport and entertainment thrown in. I read somewhere that they had to show kids programmes during the day. Is that part of their broadcasting rules or something? I know they have a dedicated channel for it so it doesn't make a lot of sense. What puzzles me is why they show loads of it during the day when kids are supposed to be in school. Maybe they should bring back schools programmes like BBC and ITV used to have.

Afraid so. Albeit their soccer coverage is on the wane. They have lost FA Cup to BBC this season and Champs/Europa Lge to BT next season. The Champs Lge matches every Tuesday were a replica of what TV3 show anyway.

TV3 has retained the UCL rights for Ireland.

It's amazing that they can bump up the bill by that amount. You might expect them to add a fiver a month onto the bill or something but that's a huge leap and bang out order.

I bet Irish viewers will be fuming when they realise the ITV sports coverage is gone for good : they won't be able to watch any of England's football internationals for example, and I presume this also means they won't be able to see ITV's coverage of Euro 2016 next year if UTVI is still around?

Yes successive ministers (under massive pressure from TV3) have prevented RTÉ keeping kids shows to RTÉ Jr and having a new weekday line up... they have also prevented RTÉ from running ads on RTÉ News Now which has mightily pissed off RTÉ and made them basically forget about the channel because it can't commercially make money.

Hopefully with the introduction of a second commercial broadcaster TV3's influence over policy ends.

You do realise UTV/ITV SD/HD are free to air on satellite and can be very easily got for literally a once off payment of about 100 quid for those with UPC/Saorview..

and..

can be just added under the "added channels" function on any sky box.

... its not like getting Australian TV or something

I'm on UPC myself so we'll see. When I heard UTVI was being launched, I assumed it would be business as usual and that we'd be able to watch the ITN news bulletins and the ITV sports coverage etc. I'm a bit surprised to hear all of that is gone and has been replaced by UTVI's own programmes (which seems mainly to be dross and fillers).

You have to remember ITV will be losing Champions League rights at the end of the season so apart from some stuff on ITV4 and the major championships/RWC then they don't have much either!

UTV's MD said recently on twitter that sport would be added as "rights became available" .. it will take a few years but gradually UTVI should improve as time passes. I don't know whether they might be using ITN reports for international news. Soon all will become apparent as news broadcasts begin on Monday.

I have tried again today to watch Pat Kenny on Utv player it is still not working but all Itv shows e.g Emmerdale, Olly Murs and Jeremy Kyle are working. I also tried to watch Lesser spotted journeys and it wouldnt work either so it seems all itv shows work but no Utv shows work on the player

I'd agree with this. There will be some however in Urban areas that won't be able to do this. Outside of Dublin and perhaps Cork and Limerick City things remain the same as almost anyone who wants decent TV choice already has Satellite, either SKY or FTA. Interestingly UTV were slow to go to HD on Satellite and most individuals I know watch ITV HD regions. They got used to it and will be slow to leave ITV HD pictures for UTV SD on Saorview....

Ah so that explains it then! That's a ridiculous situation with RTE News Now. OK, BBC News 24 doesn't have ads but then they're being funded by the licence fee (discussion for another thread though). Is RTE NN being funded by the LF or not? If not how are they making money?

Comparing RTÉ and the BBC is like apples and oranges - the BBC has a massive budget from the licence fee compared with RTÉ... Everything in RTÉ - Radio, Television, Performing Groups etc get revenue from the Television Licence and via commercial advertisement/selling rights (eg Love/Hate).

The simple fact is RTÉ NN is not making any money and is just a loop of main bulletins, RTÉ have can do very little with it when they can't fund it with ads - its a great shame because RTÉ's News and Current affairs output is very good... they could make a great little channel out of it if they were allowed. Even if they broadcast say 12-15 hours of rolling live news a day it would be great.

We're finding out now what the actual audience for Corrie and Emmerdale in the Republic is as both soaps are now only available on the one channel. I'd expect the figures for Corrie to be much higher, probably over 500k.

But which show do we think will come out on top.

1. Emmerdale is against Fair city and Eastenders on rte 1. So might struggle against them.

Rte 2 is showing Hairspray at the same time and TV 3 is showing 2014: The Highs and Lows then at 8 Brenda Grace. I dont think Rte 2 or Tv3's offerings between 7.30 and 8.30 will cause UTV any problems.

2. Pat is against Eastenders and News on Rte 1. He will be against Hairspray and Electric picnic on Rte 2 and Brenda Grace and Evelyn on TV3.

Again Eastenders might beat Pat but
I think Pat Kenny will do Ok on the night as he is there big name signing and the show is one of the pick of the days on Irish TV.

3. 'When the Sky Falls' is against Django Unchained on Rte 1, Electric Picnic and Marley on Rte 2 and Evelyn and At home with Irish Country Music on TV 3.

I have a feeling Django or Evelyn will do better than Utv's film.

4. Olly is up against Django Unchained on Rte 1, Marley on Rte 2 and At home with Irish Country Music and 2014: Here was the news on TV3.

Olly could pull it off by coming second behind Django but you never know”

So Fair City and Eastenders on Rte One and Brendan Grace on Tv3 beat Emmerdale on Utv.

When was Mission Impossible on Tv3 as I never saw it in any listings.

It will take a while for figures to settle down as happened when the soaps moved from RTE to TV3. You'll get a fairer Idea of what the Soaps actually get in about 4 to 6 weeks when everyone knows were everything is and we're clear of the Christmas Season. However I would say they're very happy with that figure for Emmerdale. Not so much for Pat who peaked at 105,000 viewers. It does appear that UTV Ireland's strength will be it's run of the mill ITV shows.

Yes there was a change to the original schedule on TV3 last night - it had originally been Brendan Grace at 8pm and the film Evelyn at 9pm.

They must have changed the schedule as That is different to my tv guide.

My tv guide was
7pm 2014: the highs and lows
