That's why Irish Citizens have basically the same rights as UK Citizens in the UK and vice versa.

This is constantly evolving in various areas of course. We're even at the point where In the long term If you want to come to Ireland from most Non-EU countries, you'll go to a UK embassy for the Visa from now on.

Because of the Common Travel Area in practical terms Britain first Border Checkpoint is Shannon Airport. (then again Ireland gets Dover)
UTV Ireland would never have launched if TV3 didn't actively block UTV NI launching on Sky.
We have sky and have always had utv northern Ireland - a lot of customers are not aware that it is to be found in "services" and "other channels" -

Ha that doesn't mean Ireland is not a foreign country - various mutual agreements were agreed over the years.

Taxes and tariffs on goods were abolished during the 1960's for instance. The 1949 act ended all political links to Ireland.... The free state ended and a democratic constitutional republic came into being.

Actually it does and the laws of both countries would back me up. As would Scottish Nationalists, (well official SNP policy) That's why a lot of commonwealth Countries had a problem with the republic for quite a while. Most members of the British Commonwealth couldn't enter Britain Freely while Irish people had full rights.

Scandinavia is an another example of this if you're Danish you're not considered 'foreign' in other Nordic Countries.

It's widely reported that when Ireland declared itself a republic that the London government wanted to impose strict border controls on people and goods from the south - Australia and Canada apparently stepped in on behalf of Dublin to stop it happening so there wasn't always free borders - whether somewhere is "foreign" in local lingo is irrelevant.

Look we could be going back and forth on this but the only people that come out and regularly say Ireland is Foreign are Hard Core Unionists in Northern Ireland. If you're talking about history pre 49, there weren't free borders at times between 22 and 49 and technically Irish was only a free state! You don't want to go down that route, next thing you'll be burning everything but english coal

Well the moaning about UTV Ireland won't be helped by this weeks Culture with the Sunday Times (Republic of Ireland Edition) They have UTV NI as the main channel and UTV IRELAND as the small channel underneath. So you'll get many tuning in for UTV NI programmes only to find they're not on UTV Ireland.

Compare that to the Irish Times which has no listing at all for UTV NI, (unless they're very well hidden) which is a bit much for a paper sold in all 32 counties.

I think we could very well see UTV reinstate UTVNI on UPC... It was an awful decision IMO to get rid of it.

I suppose people who remember Haughey from Thatchers days in the UK and the North of course might find it interesting too - he was the ultimate political cowboy!

It could be terrible Television...and it's still going to get a huge audience. I always worry when wigs come into play, especially in HD.

RTÉ have improved the quality of their homegrown drama a fair bit as of late .. We'll have to wait and see of course what they make of Haugheys exploits .. They hardly even need to write a script in reality

Folye's War would Normally do well (Also shot in Dublin) but I do think that Charlie will blow everything else away, the first week anyway. If they've gotten it right it'll be unmissable the following two weeks. If they have gotten it wrong, everyone will watch to see how wrong it is...

Everyone I know over the age of 30 in Ireland has a Charlie Story. Usually you'd say they're were made up, but when it came to CJH anything was possible.

When I heard of the new channel, I didn't think much about it and assumed we'd still be able to watch all the regular ITV1 programming without difficulty. I was a bit startled on Friday to see what the actual schedule was and that a load of programmes had gone. Many Irish people would have been watching something like News At Ten with it's famous bongs at the start for decades, and now it has just vanished overnight.

True. I saw him close up twice in my life. I once visited the Dail for Leaders Questions and at one point when he wasn't speaking he looked up at the visitors' gallery and locked his eyes onto me.....quite a surreal experience

I'm too young to ever remember Haughey in power here but jesus the mans infamous legend lives on. My grandmother was absolute Fianna Fáil to her core and she loved him, never was a bad word said about him in her house .. Not to mention the free travel

I know someone with an Indian passport (they're living in London) and they have to get a visa to go from the UK to Ireland! I'm not sure which embassy they go to for it but I know they need one.

The Irish Free State first came into being in 1922 and the current Constitution is from 1937, but it has had nearly 30 amendments.

The free travel was a great innovation and he had one or two decent policies at times. but he became power mad and money mad once he was Taoiseach.....he clearly had a huge ego.
