Do the Irish public treat rte 1 like the UK people treat BBC 1
People might not like to say it but viewership to RTÉ is very very loyal.. It's one of the if not most watched state broadcasters per capita in Europe I would say.

More a thing with older viewers, but yes, it tends to be the "default channel", so even
the most bland programme on it will generally outrate any rivals.

Being for Scotland I can't comment fully on Rte but I think they are a great broadcaster and I love Love/hate and The Fall. I also love older rte shows such as Proof and single handed and Amber

At home here they will turn off say Eastenders on BBC and switch it back to RTÉ ... It's like without the RTÉ logo they don't trust it

For every good programme there is 2 completely s.hite though .. Although I admit to being an RTÉ sport snob ... I would watch Champions League, Six Nations, World Cup etc on RTÉ over any British channel.

Though the Winning Streak fans might already have switched channels now that Nicky Byrne's new show has taken over - (to chinamug)!
I don't know about that. Everyone that's bought a lottery Ticket will watch. The show could be terrible and they'll still tune in. I've watched 10 minutes of each and again they're both not my cup of Tea, but the TV3 show is a lot better, but putting it up against the National Lottery Show is just throwing it away.

I don't know that, it's terrible whatever channel but RTÉ always takes precedent with my parents anyway... It's built into their mindset.

Is there an ad break on RTE? as I see the exact opposite happening. They're watching an Irish Channel at 7 and then they turn over to BBC for Commercial free Eastenders. I know a lot of people who record Graham Norton on BBC1 so to avoid the commercial Version on TV3

Not a bad Saturday night Schedule for UTV Ireland Tonight

7pm Stars in their Eyes
8.05 Neil Diamond: One Night Only
9.15 The Great Train Robbery
11.15 Spandau Ballet: True Gold
What? By any standard, that is a shockingly poor effort. It's a poor night all round, TV3's is equally deplorable. Just seeing what Nicky Byrne's lotto show is like, and the answer is utter tripe. He's an awful broadcaster, only used because he's a so called "name". The excellent Jenny Greene totally carries him on the radio show.

Ya there is a break on Eastenders on RTÉ.. To be honest I actually don't know anyone who watched the GNS on TV3 .. BBC being so widly available means having it a day or 2 later is just useless.

That won't be pleasing to UTV who are heavily plugging it as one of their big new shows, even gone so far as gotten Graham Norton to inform viewers of it's new home in Ireland. I think it's a bad move on their part putting it on Sunday nights, two days after the advert free version on BBC.

Ya they should just run it with the BBC ad free maybe sponsored by a major brand... Rebroadcast then with ads Saturday night late say 11pm.

RTÉ 1 will win every hour tonight with that schedule - that's the problem for UTV and TV3.
]

I'd agree except for 7 to 8. Harry Hill's Stars in their Eyes might do well and it's up against Shrek 2 which has been on 100 times everywhere.

However, it's not a problem for UTV as such. I don't think they're even competing at the Weekends. They're putting out a decent schedule and are happy enough to get some viewers but most of the hard work will have been done during the week. Their aim to make a profit was to have about 10% share in primetime (which they've almost already reached) All they need to make money is to have the soaps and maybe 3 or 4 more shows that hit the target. If they have a overall 10% share the station is viable and will almost certainly be in Second place in the Market. Every Percentage point over that means a lot more profit.

It is a problem for TV3 because Saturday is their big revenue Night.

For it's first 18 months on RTÉ there was no adverts on Eastenders. This was to settle the audience into the familiar slot. It did seem to do the trick, when it changed to include adverts RTÉ lost very few viewers to BBC, although Eastenders remains the BBC's number one show in Ireland.

I'd agree with that. They should shorten the News by 15 or so minutes and run Graham Norton at about 10.45. Most weeks it would still be starting 20 or so minutes ahead of BBC1 Northern Ireland which show their own local programme a lot of Friday Nights.

Stars in their eyes will do well as it doesnt have much competition.

Neil Diamond will come 2nd.

The Train Robbery could do well

Yes, I seen that but it's 24 hours later then the BBC which is available to most here.. Maybe the BBC won't allow it but they are losing big viewership being after the BBC.

Well RTE have done it, they've created a Game Show that Makes Winning Streak look good. Have had it on over the last few minutes again and it's god awful. The only attraction any audience would have is that they could be on next week. The TV3 show isn't great but it's not terrible. It at least feels like the contestants are awake which is always nice.

So UTV could pull it, off next week they have The Cube on at 8pm
