A good point.
Presumably the gaps in ITV's schedule left by Champions League, the Cowell shows and Downton will be filled from ITV's own catalogue, and not involve rights contention. Whatever replaces Champions League will presumably be UK/RoI clear as would any other major drama commission. UTV may have an aspiration to acquire some all-Ireland sports rights which would present the need to encrypt both UTV~I and UTV~NI. In the not too distant future perhaps UTV in Ireland will function as an affiliate ITV region, with UTV~NI as a sub-region? |

So basically it'll simulcast all ITV shows, apart from those considered less popular?

Sport in Ireland is a big rating winner - GAA and Irish internationals (rugby & soccer) would potentially be very lucrative for UTV..

No we dont actually know but we are lead to believe that they will show all Itv shows except The x factor, bgt and Downton Abbey as utv dont own the rights Tv3 does. I never included Jonathan Ross as I didnt know where to schedule it

This wont happen. UTV Ireland is going to be a dull clone of another dull channel with very few differences.

So they do. The thing they will struggle with is that they dont have a second channel so for example they would air Im a celeb then there spin off straight after so they wont be able to show Jonathan Ross at the same time as Itv. The only alternative they have is to air it on the following Friday

I think it will be encrypted in case they ever get ROI exclusive rights to anything in the future - buying rights for Ireland is massively cheaper encrypted then FTA for obvious reasons. I suppose it all depends on where UTV see the station going in the future years.

We have to remember too that RTÉ and TV3 have film rights for Ireland wrapped up so the ITV Studio catelogue could very well be used an awful lot to fill the gaps.
Quality Irish homegrown stuff would be IMO the main money making tool for UTVI in the future - Irish people are very loyal to Irish television. ITV stuff will make them money but to make hay they will have to tackle RTÉ's dominance... TV3 have failed absolutely miserably to take RTÉ on. Everything they have tried has failed because they seem to think cheap, tacky, showbiz stuff will win viewers - RTÉ's dominance (19/20 top shows in Ireland in 2012) show how far TV3 have fell short. Its now over to UTVI to try chip into RTÉ's viewership. |

While I agree with you that Quality Irish Programmes can be rating winners, I don't necessarily agree that people are loyal to Irish TV... They are Very loyal to RTE 1 and to Irish sporting events. If you strip out TV3's Soaps and RTE2's Sport they both have very poor viewing figures. There has always been a huge appetite in Ireland for UK programmes, even well before the start of Telefis Eireann back in 1961. Remember this is the same country that got a TD elected on the platform of access to BBC and ITV.

Lol so they wanted to rule themselves but have our tv and we in the UK let them! When Scotland wanted the same thing they were pelted down on the idea!
) so British television is basically the only stuff we would be interested in Europe... Not to mention the BBC is probably the best state broadcaster in the world. Encryption on Irish channels means it's not a two way flow though - we get the best of both worlds where as you lot just get British stuff

This would be especially true when it came to RTE in the 80's when UK TV would have had more of a connection with the audience that RTE itself a lot of the time. There was a limited amount of home production shown on RTE1 at that time and almost none on RTE2. So if you weren't a fan of American shows it was off to the BBC or ITV (who showed far less American shows) |

Well you say people are loyal to RTÉ One - RTÉ basically is Irish television almost exclusively ... Viewing figures show BBC, UTV, C4 etc make very little inroads into Irish viewing figures even though all are available FTA.

Are Utv Ireland contracted to shown the UK soaps at the same time as ITV as having the 2 friday eps of Corrie on a Sunday would be good in the Autumn when Itv are showing The X Factor from 8-9

TV3 have held back ITV shows in the past (such as downton abbey) and half the audience went off to UTV/ITV. There is plenty of ITV Drama in the Vaults that UTV can use to fill up that 8 to 9 slot. However if UTV do get the advertising spend they're projecting, TV3 might not be around to show X-factor next autumn. |

I would presume that UTV can show the soaps any time they wish as long as the start time is not more than a minute or two ahead of the ITV network. However, They will almost certainly show the soaps at exactly the same time as the network, otherwise soap viewers with dishes will just turn over to another ITV region.

I think it will be in HD as Utv in Northern Ireland is in HD
It costs about the same or slightly more for carriage of a HD channel on UK Freeview, but viewing figures are an order of magnitude bigger in the UK. So 2RN will need to come up with a fairer pricing structure and fast. |
