CS Producer SB Slates EE Producer DTC's introduction of the Carters
So in a recent article Stuart Blackburn has compared Corrie characters Luke, Steph and the Nazir family to EastEnders family the Carters and has stated that "it's very rare that you can bring in a new family of characters en masse and suddenly start giving them huge storylines" and referring to the slow burn of his characters he said "The slow-burn has been very deliberate on my part. It's like in real life when your neighbours of 20 years move out and new ones move in - it doesn't matter if they're nice or not, it takes time to build up the same relationship!".
What are your opinions? Do you like the way the Carters have been introduced, or do you think it has been all too overwhelming? |

Not normally one to defend The Hat, but in this case he isn't actually slating them. Complete opposite in fact.

"the Carters in EastEnders have been brilliant but.." doesn't sound like 'slating' to me.
Either way though, the Nazirs are dreadful. |

He's hardly 'slating' the Carters, he just said that you can't just bring in a family & start giving them big SL's.

He slates the way they were brought in but not the Carters themselves. It's a back handed compliment, I find it quite amusing.
The problem with slow burn introductions is that that sympathy isn't there from the start, and the big entrances can be too overwhelming. I think it depends on the type of character. EastEnders have done both kinds of introduction this year. |

How am I lying? If I said, your cowboy hat is brilliant, I wish I could try as hard to be cool like you do.
Is that a compliment or an insult? |

Have you been sold, because of the "brilliant" 'compliment' he chucked into the sentence? He was just trying to sugar-coat his jibe, imo.
Again, not a fan but his point is fair. It is a rare that a soap can introduce a family in one go and have everyone gel so well. There have been some disastrous families introduced in one full swoop over the years. |

He's not slating EastEnders but normally I would prefer a slow burner with a family like the Nazeers I don't want them on screen at all they're a really horrible and annoying family.

I don't think that's what he is saying. I read it as that it's rare to bring in a new family, give them huge storylines, and for it to work, but in the Carters case he thinks it did.
That said, he wants to get his own ship in order before comparing it to others. |

I didn't read his comment as an insult. I read it as him saying "The Carters are brilliant but it's rare you can bring in a family and start giving them big stories straight away". Which is very true. That almost never works.

I agree with him, it's a point I've made on here before. How many times have we have huge families dumped on us, it's too many new faces all at once and it takes a long time for them to be integrated into the street because most of their scenes are with each other (the Mortons, the Claytons, the Hopkins, the Windasses, the Harrises). The McDonalds are about the only family to come in that way and be successful.
In fact, my biggest problem with the Nazirs is they've not had enough scenes with each other. We should be seeing them together to see what the chemistry is like. |

Look at it this way, Corrie have done big introductions of new families in the past, and they failed miserably (Mortons, Windass 1.0), thats what he was getting at, its rare that you can introduce a new family and have them settle in as well as the Carters.

I'm sorry but SB doesn't deserve to say anything negative about other soaps when he's made Corrie the poorest soap of 2014.
