can't save network settings
lamby

Hey

When I try and change my WiFi details to static and put 2/DnNS settings in. The save option is greyed out. How can I override this?

Is it a router setting?

You can't just change the DNS settings in isolation. You have to fill in all the fields. On my phone the IP address etc fields have entries in grey but these are simply examples. You have to actually type a number into the field.

Ahhh so it won't fill it in automatically?

That's the whole point of a static IP. You tell it what address you want not what the router decides to give it.

We did this but still its not showing "save" as an option.

Could it be a router issue?

The setup for the router is basically an enter the key and away you go...

Nowt to do with the router. The router has absolutely no idea at all that you are mucking about with the settings of the phone/tablet/PC/TV/Sky box or whatever else you care to connect to it. It will only know about it once you save the settings and then try to connect the device to the router. At that point you will know if the router likes what you have done but not before.

There must be some setting you are not entering correctly (or at all). For example make sure you have entered dots between the digit groups in the IP address etc and not a comma by accident.

Not going to make a blind bit of difference. As I said above the router couldn't care less what you do to the phone. It's nothing to do with it. It is entirely down to what is being entered into the phone. And you can get that wrong anywhere.

And of course if you are nowhere near the router how can you test the settings to make sure they work once you do manage to save them?

He can try to connect when he gets home. Looks like a visit from me is on the cards.

Would deleting the AP then re-adding it possibly solve the issue in Android?

I doubt it. But as long as you know the password etc needed to re-establish the connection then no harm trying.

But it won't make any difference if it is what you are typing into the settings of the phone that is wrong. As I posted above easy enough to tap the comma instead of the full stop key between the digit groups. So if the phone checks what you've typed as you go it won't turn the SAVE button on but might not necessarily tell you why!

Another thing I've seen (not necessarily on phones) is a device will require you to enter an address as 192.168.001.003 rather than 192.168.1.3

Just out of interest what are you trying to achieve by putting in a different DNS setting?

Hey

He has entered it so many times i would be surprised if he is entering a , instead of a .

He is trying to setup a Smart DNS service.

I will also get him to try the 001.073 in the IP format. Does that apply to the gateway too?

Well,I don't think it can be changed once your select the DNS because it automatically assigns the IP addresses i.e. everything is in control of the DNS server. But if you still want the change the you need to select the static.
