Soaps viewers dropping, why are they losing their appeal?

I think the decline of soaps is exaggerated. They are still the most watched shows almost every night and no other shows have such a loyal audience. So many people watch on catch up now because it's quite a commitment to watch live every night. I'm rarely able to watch live even though I'd like to ideally.
People so watch on catch up, but I don't think that many do. I'd say around 2 - 3 million, but catch up existed in 2010, and I for one would watch the soaps on record most of the time, in 2010, and well...

iPlayer, record and catch up were all available back then, and I would use them a lot of the time, along with a lot of other people. Soaps have declined in general, but as you say they are still the most watched TV shows most of the time.
