Personally i'd like EastEnders to be more like a Cold shower than a warm bubble bath.
I want it to be so ice cold that it's like having your body stabbed all over.
At present for me EastEnders is too fluffy and not gloomy enough. It needs to be dark and gritty once again.

Sure a nice warm bath is good at times but there's only so many scenes like The Carters dressed as the spice girls or mick swimming that EastEnders needs.

Would you prefer EastEnders to be how it used to be with Storylines like Trevor and Mo and People being buried alive

or would you prefer Cold cuts, missing snakes and the spice girls?

And bringing all the killers back does not make the show gritty. It makes it ludicrous and far fetched.

I went for a Dark, depressing but i would want it to be about 70/30, you do need some light hearted stuff to lighten the mood and keep some humor

Agreed.

Of course. I am not saying it has to be downright depressing all of the time (Not that i'd mind that) a little lightness and humour once in a blue moon is ok. Maybe the odd scene with Mick and Linda or Kat and Alfie but that's it.

The one-liners always worked well around the grit but even now they are few and far between.

I am with you, we need to get that grittiness back.
I thought with DTC taking over we would.

As dark and cold possible. Hopefully we're heading there.

Dark, gritty drama is what EE does best. It's what makes it stand out from the other soap operas.

I agree. Emmerdale and Corrie can keep it's humour and lightness for all I am concerned. It was EastEnders being dark and gritty that caught my eye 20 odd years ago.

Definitely prefer cold showers on a winter windy evening with blood stain hand prints on the rotting dark bathroom tiles!

December 2013 - May 2014 dtc turns the show around into a fantastic new era
June 2014 - present my dtc hasn't been working to his best! Too much 'fluffy enders' going on, micks swimming was atrocious! Look at how gritty the show was back in 2001 compared to now! Having said that though, it is getting grittier again! December - May it was definitely getting better! Were still having gritty scenes now, but I really do hope they're saving the good stuff til the autumn, and that this summer was just a bit of a break! it's definitely a lot better than what it was in the 2011-2013 period though! A bit annoyed at how the kiddies are creeping back in with their love triangles! Hope this ends soon! The last thing we need is another cringey 'the teens take the caravan down the woods'

Tbf though EastEnders is never that gritty in the summer, apart from when a big storyline comes into it, so the autumn and so on should be a lot better...

I think there needs to be a balance, it can't survive in being 'cold' or 'warm', there has to be a good blend. I do agree that in current EastEnders, things are a little too safe and light, despite many of the plots actually revolving around miserable stuff.

Jean's recent suicide attempt is a prime example... it was all implied, rather than being the shocking/ emotional doof-doof moment that it could have been. I get content restrictions and whatnot, but to show nothing whatsoever was all a bit 'Neighbours' and safe.

Despite the questionable handling of many of the storylines, I do think current EE is of good form in terms of characters, but I do think it needs work in being more hard-hitting, emotional and shocking.

I liked it and thought the scene with the carters jumping in was perfect. I even didn't mind Music being played over the top either but keep those sort of scenes to a minimum. We could have one in there on Christmas day and then again at Easter but lets not push it.

I fear that this is the best the show can get back too after all the hype DTC got in the beginning and the way the BBC and the cast were singing him praises.

DTC has been an improvement on Bryan Kirkwood and Lorraine Newman, but it is safe to say (for me anyway) that his era has been more hit than miss. I'm not intrigued by any of the storylines currently, but that is mainly down to the lacklustre writing

The ingredients are all there for it to be brilliant, the cast is pretty much the best it's had in years, the likes of Ashdown and Newman are out along with most of the rot at the top... but something just isn't clicking

There's too much happy-clappy-Carter-family-singsong-meal-get-togethers, where they sit around and talk about feelings and whether anyone has walked Lady Di like the bloody Brady bunch.

The Lucy death and immediate aftermath were incredible IMO, but since then it's been all over the place. The damp squib Billy 'reveal', Lauren and Peter running around looking for a taxi driver for a week, Ian turning super-villain. We know it ends in February, which just makes it feel like nothing that happens in the interim matters or has any consequence. I'm expecting the next 'secret twist' but know that it doesn't really mean anything.

I love Charlie and Yvonne but that storyline took a turn for the bizarre this evening... Half of the scenes in this weeks episodes seem to have been devoted to Dot's jumble sale. That isn't the 'dangerous, real, and naughty' Eastenders we were promised.

What we needed was a decent, hard hitting plot to see the show through the summer lull. I wish they'd pushed forward the upcoming Masood plot, had it kick off in June and reach a climax in August/September. The Masoods are apparently 'B-list characters', why not have given them their moment to shine through the Summer, when ratings are expected to be lower, and cutting some of the crap we've had to deal with.

Somewhere in the middle. I don't want a depress fest so I've voted warm bath. No cold cuts, but more family scenes (especially Whitney and Lily and Kat, Alfie and Tommy with the new twins) wouldn't go a miss. The maternal side of Kat is something that we've never really seen.

Darker than a nun wearing a balaclava in a cave.

When Mick is triumphantly swimming I want Shirley to jump in and drag him down screaming "Don't get any ideas Michael Phelps!"; I want Linda to batter Dean to death with a hair dryer and tell him it's because he's worth it; I want Ronnie to go proper loco and start dressing Roxy in a babygro;

I want Sharon to turn to the occult and resurrect Den, Angie and Dennis; I want Denise to find out about Ian's dalliances and drive him up the wall by forcing Cindy to dye her hair blonde, wear grey suits and talk posher than everyone else;

I want Bobby to return and whisper to Bianca that he sees dead people; I want the Ghost of Ev to stalk Ben forever more taunting him by dropping picture frames wherever he goes...

I also want the theme tune to be this:

I just wish they would do their research more and not have these random plot developments. Emma finding out Charlie was not a cop but then taking his word that he was special ops just didn't ring true and I don't know what the point of it was.

The thing is though, it has got some gritiness back, but I think a lot of the writers are rubbish! 2007-2010 wasn't the best era but it was a flamin good one! I miss scenes like stacey jumping on trinas coffin, max being buried alive etc... I just hope there's a good mix on Christmas with the stories! I hope it's not all about the carters secrets! That will just ruin the Christmas Day episode! I think with ronnie, stacey, and nick about to return, we can be sure to see some gritiness very soon! Don't forget there's a fire and a wedding which could go horribly wrong in the coming months! I just think this summer is best forgotten about, as a lot of fans haven't enjoyed it! A real shame after dtc delivered brilliant work in his first half of the year!

I think the point was more of a threat towards Emma and Max's relationship:P
