Sony HXD890 doesn't like A Touch Of Frost
My Dad's in his 80s, and has been happily using his HXD890 for years (having first said how he wouldn't be able to use 'computers'). He's having a few problems at the moment, though, which all seem to revolve around A Touch Of Frost on ITV3, which he's trying to record the whole lot.
1) There doesn't seem to be a series record option on this programme when he sets the timer, so he has to seek out every broadcast and set each one manually. Anyone else having this problem? 2) Even once he's set all the timers, the recorder won't actually record A Touch Of Frost. It'll happily do The Royal, Heartbeat on ITV3, and seemingly anything else on any other channel. Again, can anyone help? 3) When I looked at what he's got the timer set for, there were half a dozen A Touch Of Frosts set for back in May/June, each of which had "No Broadcast" to the right and the recorder wouldn't let me erase the timer setting. I went through the motions, but the settings stayed in the list. There were a few other old programmes in the list too, which wouldn't be deleted, all of which had "No Broadcast" to the right-hand side. I've tried holding the power for a reset, retuning, and checking for a software upgrade. He's going to unplug it overnight tonight "to give it a rest and see if that'll sort it". I'd like to try and sort this for him if I can, as he loves the recorder. TalkTalk want to give him a YouView box, but he likes being able to edit out the adverts and then burn to DVD. For someone who "wouldn't be able to use computers" he's got quite good and finding his way round the HXD890. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. |

There's been a number of issues with the 890's, and while there's not been an update for a number of years (and not likely to ever be any more) it's worthwhile redoing the last one.

My parents have got my old Sony HXD recorder and they have had a few 'no broadcast' messages from set timers. I discovered one day that my dad was turning off the aerial signal booster at the wall socket when turning the TV off and hence if a programme was set to record when the TV wasn't on, then the recording failed!

Thanks for your suggestions about the firmware update. I sent the instructions and a disc to my Dad, but was concerned that I'd somehow created the disc incorrectly, as the Sony instructions say I should be "using disc-at-once mode and ISO 9660 CD-ROM file system format". I have no idea what this is, and haven't been able to find any help online.....
Anyway, after the overnight power down my Dad was going to do, all the "no broadcast" timer settings have vanished from the list, and the recorder is now behaving itself - recording A Touch Of Frost every day! |
