Jim McDonald - Name Calling
Unsure if this has a thread elsewhere - just wondering if this needs a dedicated thread of it's own. The format is usual characters names against the Jim McDonald version. I'll start with:
Liz - Elizabeth Steve - Steven Andy - Andrew Jack - Jacko Ken - Kenneth Mike - Michael Percy - Percival? |

When Alec Gilroy was still in Corrie, Jim use to call him 'Sandy'. I had no idea why for years, but then my Mum explained it's a common Irish/Scottish thing (slightly embarrassing, as I'm from an Irish family!).

Some people prefer addressing people with their full names rather than shortened versions.
sone even hate their names being shortened! plus it gives the appearance of being domineering |

It shouldn't be a matter of the preference of the person doing the addressing - unless you're up in court - it should be the preference of the person being addressed. |

It's pretty rude, though.

Strangely its quite an interesting thing as it comes from your personality type. I would imagine if you know a person like jim in real life it would be easier to see cos you would see other differences in your personality. someone domineering, controlling and likes things just so is more likely to use full names, whereas someone socialble, goes with the flow, laid back person will use the nickname/shortened version or make their own ![]() I do like Jim's ways though it's great him being back on screen and great way to have a valid prison storyline |

I know that JIm is Northern Irish,or an Ulsterman if you
will, but it is also an 'Irish' thing. I have a good friend Joe whose mother was Irish, and she never referred to him as anything other than 'Joseph'. His friend Ant, was likewise always 'Anthony' to her. |

It's one of the few character consistencies that Jim has always referred to people by their full names or a nickname that they never use. I really like it. and have a habit of shortening or lengthening people's names in a way that no one else does. Most people seem to like it and say "you're the only person who ever calls me that, but I like it".

Surely they can get the term of his prison sentence reduced, but the way they are putting Jim over as supplying Stupid Peter with the booze it is more likely that he will get his term increased! |

Yes I like that Jim has his own take on people's names, it's very in-character. A way of exerting control - interesting point, never thought of it like that.
I think as well it's a northern / older generation thing, when giving somebody a nickname or shortening their name was a sign of familiarity and affection - and people weren't so precious about 'you must call me by the name I choose'. I certainly noticed it when I first came south. Although Jim isn't literally old he's got that vibe. |
