Did they kill the wrong Beale twin off?
I have, since day one, been of the opinion that Lucy/Hetti brought far more to the show than Peter/Ben does, and that they made a mistake killing Lucy, when they should in fact have killed Peter off, and I see other people echoing that around the forum so I am curious to see what the overall sentiment is. Poll should be up soon

There was campaigns to have Hetti axed so no point in moaning about it now. You all got your wish.

In terms of future potential as a character, yes.
In terms of the impact of being killed, no. The murder of a female seems to grab more attention, plus it's deprived Ian of his only daughter and ripped a bigger hole in the middle of the Beales than Peter would have done. Judging by current form, had Peter been killed, Ian would be going around thinking 'at least it wasn't Lucy.' Lucy was the kind of character to have these secrets, I couldn't see Peter with the same. In summary, short term no, long term yes. That said, I've disliked Peter quite often this year and said before Lucy died that I wished it was him they were getting rid of instead. |

I voted yes, I started to really like Lucy as both a character and an actress and then she died. I'm not a huge fan of Peter but I did think his acting during the aftermath was great.

Peter is needed to be Ian's successor as father of the Beales.hopefully with Lauren as his missus.

Lucy should never have been killed off but Peter shouldn't be either. Now the dust is starting to settle I'm beginning to think DTC is not all that.
The Beale's are too thin on the ground to have ****ed up like this. They should have got Jo Joyner back for a year and killed off Lauren Branning instead. That would have worked better in terms of storylines. |

After some consideration they could have killed Whitney and it would have had the same effect as it would've involved Bianca's exit, Carol et al.

no, as lucy was ian's favourite it had more impact. plus peter will keep the beale line going in name. to be honest i don't think they should have killed lucy off.

neither should have been killed off period, they are/were the future of the show, somebody more minor should have been killed off.

Accidentally voted 'no' shit haha, but it's Hard choice but if it came to character I'd choose lucy any day! Peter is so awful and dull! And a vile person at times (even before Lucy died)! Lucy May have been vile but she was a very interesting character, but when it comes down to actors, they're both quite bad so it's hard to say haha! Melissa and Lucy was absolutely fantastic, and if they kept into her the impact would have been a lot better! As far as I'm concerned Lucy and peter left in 2010... Melissa being axed was just ridiculous! Shame they don't have the balls to axe fatboy!

It shouldn't have been Lauren or Whitney. it was right to be Lucy, Lucy is a legacy character and we are about to hit the 30th anniversary and putting the Beales at the centre of it all is genius.

Peter is a jerk but let's not get all nostalgic and misty-eyed about Lucy. She was terrible.

Nah, Lucy was always the trouble maker and the one who would've crossed someone enough to get herself killed. Someone wanting to off Peter wouldn't make much sense.

Hmm it's difficult. Lucy as a character had a lot more potential and I think the actress was just starting to come into her own after a difficult transition from the old actress. But then on the other hand Peter dying would have had a lot less impact and not as shocking considering he was always second best to Lucy in the Beale household. DTC wanted something shocking and a death that'd create discussion so on short term no; long term yes.

Lucy played by Hetti had to go. It was one of the most obvious decisions for anyone taking the reins of the show. She was one of the legacy characters but played by a p.ss poor actress who just didn't fit. I hope the casting director was sacked as well. The decision was another recast or use her legacy character status (linkage across the Square/family history) to create a story around her death. He opted for the latter. I have to say that having had a show which just seemed to have ad-hoc stories thrown at the viewer the very fact that an integrated storyline has been developed is a plus. It isn't going to suit folks with the attention span of a gnat though. The mistake made I believe is that the Lucy death was announced in advance. It should have shocked the viewer as much as it shocked the residents of Albert Square. Not sure if that was the original intention and media blew it. Also giving an end date but I'm not of the view that anyone who is put in the frame during 2014 isn't going to end up as the killer. How many times in real life is the culprit questioned months before but the jigsaw is not sufficient to charge/convict.

These multiple hate threads on Peter and his actor are really becoming pathetic, it's like the Hetti Bywater hate all over again and now people suddenly miss her? Hypocrites

Well it's not as if Lucy was a very popular character.
Even when people get all rose-tinted about Suffield in the role (who was not very good either), Lucy was hardly popular then either. However, looking at it outside of the actors who have played the roles, I'd say there was far more potential for Lucy to develop in the style of Cindy than there is modelling Peter after Ian. Though it's a shame either had to be killed off. I think out of the main 4 actors who've played the twins that Ben Hardy is probably the best but probably won't stay very long. For the potential of this long running murder mystery, Lucy is more the type to get herself into all kinds of trouble and therefore create all of this intrigue and mystery. |

Did not like Hetti, I liked Mel better, it was an ok choice, would have preferred if Dexter was brutally murdered instead of any of the Beale twins!

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad Lucy is dead. Hell I wish Peter The Smug was dead too. The problem is not that they chose the wrong twin but rather the wrong character from the wrong family. The Beales are vile and hard to sympathise with. A bigger and more endearing character should have been chosen instead of the awful Lucy who was already as good as dead in the water thanks to a failed recast. Lauren is similarly hard to empathise with, Abi is annoying, Jay is self righteous, Dexter is a tw*t and so on. They really didn't have a whole lot to choose from when it comes to young characters we'd feel the loss of and feel sorry for their families. Maybe Denny or Tiff should have been murdered but I don't think EastEnders would have the balls to do that and the latter would have resulted in a mess anyway with Patsy Palmer leaving.
The big problem with this storyline is that it's a bog standard who done it. It isn't gritty, it isn't emotional, it's just standard soap fare. Maybe the way to go would have been to kill off a big character like the time Dirty Den was murdered. That storyline stayed interesting and exciting throughout and managed to involve most of the square. We may not have sympathised with Den but it had a brilliant character like Chrissie at the heart of it who a lot of people did manage to root for even though she was the murderer. I don't feel excited about Lucy's murder or sad that she's dead. The whole Broadchurch thing the writers were going for has failed in my opinion. |

this is what i keep telling people on ds, nlucys death may have been sad but it didnt have me in tears like tiffanys death for example, the actress was only in it for about a year and to me she was never really lucy beale, im sorry but when characters are recast its never the same and i dont care what anyone says unless its played the a identical twin lool. had it been mellissa killed off yes the nation would have been in tears but to be honest i get the feeling mellissa would never have been axed had she stayed.
But I think I understand what you're trying to say, because I feel the same. I don't believe it was ever a choice between Lucy and Peter. Lucy under Melissa probably wouldn't have been killed off. There was so much potential with Lucy. If Melissa had still been playing the role of Lucy, then I believe we probably would have seen Abi killed in April. Lucy under Hetti however, wasn't really working in the same way, though, and it doesn't feel like too much of a loss to have gotten rid of her. |
