Lou Beale has never been been bettered. I encourage every young EastEnders fan to watch this clip and learn the history of their show.

Agreed. Funnily enough, the Beales ignored Lou's advice which is part of their decline. Hopefully, they'll be back to their old prominence.

This is also a good clip that I'd recommend fans watch. DTC should recreate this is a modern way:

Great clip! I'd love to see Sharon and Linda go to war this New Years Eve with The Albert and The Victoria.

This is a brilliant clip of great EastEnders. I wonder if Ian still has that book.

R.I.P Anna Wing, shame she only died last year, if she could've come back for the 30th it would have made EastEnders.

Apart from the fact Lou Beale is dead, and has been for 26 years.

Anna Wing was excellent as Lou Beale she was the ultimate Battleaxe, the Fowler's and the Beale's were terrified of the 'Old Bag' , Lou had her family weighed up and knew of all there weaknesses and she wasn't scared of telling them. Agreed it would of been brilliant if Lou hadn't being killed of on EastEnders a move Anna Wing later admitted was a mistake and she would of still being alive in real life to play a part in the 30th Anniversary but she had a brilliant innings that is for sure as not many people live to be 98 years of age.

If Lou stayed, the direction of the Beales and Fowlers would be very different. Simon may not have cheated with Cindy, Kathy and Pete would have remained married, Arthur would not have had the affair with Mrs Hewitt, Arthur may not have died, Pete may not have died, Michelle would not have slept with Grant. As soon as Lou died, it went pear shaped for them.

Didn't realise Anna died last year, that is sad. Eastenders lacks a Matriarch Type character.

We seem to be in the dawn of the patriarchs instead, Patrick turned from an old rogue into someone others could rely on. Stan seems very protective and supportive of his family too, in fact I sometimes see him as the modern male equivalent of Lou.

It was a good scene but at the time was totally daft as Lou Beale was not even ill. She just decided she was about to die and called the family conference and said "I can go now". Then at the start of the next episode she was dead. That episode also featured the aftermath including the funeral. All in one episode.

Lou is the Original matriarch, no one beats her - the close ones were Peggy, the iconic Pat and to some extent Zainab. A much more sympathetic, responsible Shirley could become a great matriarch for the Carters if Sylvie isn't introduced and Aunt Babe doesn't become a regular character.

Ava Fox could be a dynamic matriarch if the likes of Chelsea, Daphne, Kim are re-introduced. Carol had the potential to become one in this new EE era but with Bianca going and her contract extended for one year, it doesn't seem likely.

I remember her letting rip at Pauline in episode 1, telling her to have an abortion or leave the house, I knew we were in for something different.
