Cheapest touch screen phone on EE for Whatsapp?
roadshow2006

Hi,

Does anyone have any recommendations for a cheap touch screen EE phone that isn't tied to any contract that can be used for calls, texts, and basic 3G like Whatsapp? The network isn't really up for discussion. I could look on eBay but I wouldn't know what to look out for.

Cheapest phone on EE is probably the EE Kestral, £99 on PAYG.

Or do you mean on Orange or T-Mobile when you mention 3G?

Any of those variations I suppose...

Wouldn't touch EE they don't do a 'Unlimited' package.

That's not answering the O.P's question. That's just you expressing a beef. They stated they wanted Whatsapp, which uses absolutely minute amounts of data, and basic web access. They'd probably easily need less than 1 gb per month for that.

If that's the case, the Alcatel Onetouch Pop S3 will do the trick. £79.00 plus £10.00 top up.

Though the Nokia Lumia 625 is well worth the extra £20, better screen, processor,build-quality and camera.

What about using the ConnectA2 app - which can send messages to WhatsApp users - on a cheap Firefox OS handset such as the new Intex Cloud FX or Spice Fire One Mi-FX 1 for 2,000 rupees (£20) + delivery to UK? Both are 2G but that shouldn't be a problem for your use cases. Alternatively, you can buy the 3G ZTE Open C for under £40 delivered from the UK.

Personally, though, I would save up a bit more and instead buy one of the Android One handsets that are being released next month. £75 for essentially a Moto E + better camera + Google Dialler would represent better value to me.

For cheap and usable with a brand name the Nokia 520 (£76 SIM free on Amazon) would be fine.

£59.95 from CPW (£69.95 with the mandatory top up) or £49.95 if you have access to a PAYG sim that qualifies for their upgrade policy.

The ZTE Open C is available for £42.99 SIM-free on eBay, delivered from the UK, and it appears that the Intex and Spice actually work out dearer when delivery and customs duty from India is taken into account.

If you ask one of the eBay sellers, he/she should be able to flash the ZTE Open C with Android 4.4.4 over the top of Firefox OS 1.3, which should end up like this:

(unfortunately, Chinavision no longer seem to offer the pre-installed version)

Indeed, reading a review of the Intex Cloud FX, it seems as though this may give better performance:

The low-end Lumias like the 520 and 635 are usually good bets.
