Unresponive iPad Mini screen

My son has cocked up his iPad Mini, damaged the screen and now parts of the screen are unresponsive. He wants to wipe and factory-restore it (to get rid of bank details etc) with a view to selling it for spares or repair on eBay, but when he attaches is to iTunes, ot demands he input his passcode, which he can't because the screen is, in parts, not responsive. Any suggestions as to how to proceed to wipe the contents? I should add the the Home button is also unresponsive so it can't be used to be put into recovery mode.

Good idea, but he doesn't have an iCloud account.

I don't think he had a choice. I'm sure it's a compulsory part of the setup procedure. And wouldn't he need it in order to link via iTunes?

Presumably he hasn't stored his bank entry codes, so that's nothing to worry about.

Put it in recovery mode manually and restore through iTunes. No touchscreen actions are required to restore this way.

No, it's not. You can skip iCloud setup / sign-in when setting up the device.

Ok, but wouldn't that mean you couldn't install apps, even free ones?

No, you can have an Apple ID without iCloud for store purchases / free app downloads.
