I only started watching in 2007, so I missed their first stint, when they were brought back in 2010, I thought it was normal of them to behave the way they did, but obviously not as a lot of people on here disagree, this is a really random question but what was wrong with them 2010-2012 and have LN and DTC redeemed them?
What was wrong with Kat and Alfie?

Alfie did and was cold with her for months. Eventually she started drinking a lot which resulted in a one night stand. Alfie was going to leave so she left instead. It was fairly awful for the character, but was nowhere near the trashiness of alleyway guy and was excused by many as it was a plot device to write Jessie Wallace out for maternity leave.
While Kat was away, Alfie had a non-sexual relationship with Kat's sister, Little Mo. When Kat returned, Kat bent over backwards to win Alfie back. For a time, Alfie was seeing both at the same time (but didn't sleep with either until he finally chose Kat.)
Kirkwood never got anything right as far as Kat and Alfie went. Knowing how much Alfie and Little Mo hurt, she would not have slept with his cousin. I agree!
Kat should have never been put with Michael or had an affair with Derek and Alfie indeed should have ended his relationship with Roxy sooner.
In my opinion they should have never been split up, I mean, all the grovelling Kat did to win Alfie back and the 'will they won't they get back together' story line that kept us guessing right up to the end when he drove off leaving Kat and then he came back for her and off they went to a new life all redeemed and forgiven and then they came back having seemingly split and her pregnant with another man's child.
I've just played a game of guess who and it took 30 minutes for my kids to think of Kat Slater out of ALL the EastEnders characters.

People are as old as they feel I suppose, look at Madonna, she's 56 but doesn't act or dress accordingly so she appears much younger.
I'm in my 40s but haven't changed much since I was younger!

The backstory of each character was tragic in its own way (more so Kat's) and they contrasted nicely, as their personalities do now; Alfie is a necessary calming influence for her I feel.
Newman did a good job of redeeming them, although it wasn't great that Alfie kept things going with Roxy after realising he could never love her like he did Kat. I feel she could have ended the affair sooner, but that's the only criticism I have of them under her. Kirkwood had done too much work on the affair plot prior to leaving for Lorraine to quash it it seems, from an interview with some of the cast.
As for DTC, it's clear that his priority is Mick and Linda but the twins were an excellent decision by him to strengthen the couple. They've had more than enough trauma where babies are concerned and it is fitting for both of them; Kat who wasn't allowed to raise Zoe and Alfie who had to adopt a father figure role to his younger brother after their parents died, and who has brought Tommy up as his own. They've had their off moments (Kat's perjury/Stacey obsession and Alfie's schemes bordering on ridiculous some of the time) but they are currently the closest they've been to the couple who left. Not all of them obviously, but this does seem to have brought the couple's fans back (me included, I detested them from 2010-12.)

I love Kat & Alfie, even today, & like you say, them having the twins has made them stronger, it's just a case of eliminating 2010-2012 Berkwood, Who Shagged Kat & Alfie getting with Roxy? Terrible idea & should never have been allowed on screen, plus the ludicrous baby swap.
I was cheering when Alfie chased after Kat in the airport last year, they are my favourite soap couple but I hope it's not Alfie who starts this fire & they split up again then decide to get back together for the kids' sakes.

I don't have the body so I don't wear skimpy clothes but I don't wear twinset and pearls or sensible shoes, I like jeans/trousers and a t-shirt/top and my trainers or basketball boots!

Kat used to be more caring. Having Zoe around did bring out the nurturer in her. So it's a shame she's not in it anymore. Kat and Zoe had great chemistry together. Alfie used to be this jolly happy go lucky bloke who showed kindness to everyone (except Andy Hunter but with good reason) I think he's slightly more serious and less jolly now. Maybe he's just grown up a bit! Lol

Kat was sooooooooooooo horrid back in 2010/2011 and it wasn't just the affairs she was always nasty to Alfie almost bordering on domesticated abuse, she was miserable and always shouting at everyone.

When Kat and Alfie returned in 2010 they had been married 7 years. They should have been a strong, solid, stable couple with a healthy marriage and a couple of kids. Instead they returned with Kat pregnant by Alfie's cousin and their entire relationship broken beyond repair. It was depressing. Kat was prepared to leave Alfie for Michael in 2010 she was then cold and uncaring towards him for all of 2011. Alfie was portrayed as a complete doormat who allowed Kat to abuse him mentally and emotionally. He would get no love or affection from her and constantly babysit her and his cousins illegitimate love child whilst she was out sleeping with other men. She cheated on him again in October 2011 by having a one night stand and then the following year by conducting a lengthy affair with Derek of all people. Their relationship was appalling anyone who likes them being a couple now must have forgotten just how bad it was back then.
For a new viewer there'd be nothing wrong with K&A - and that's ok.
